The argument tossed about thes days is that with the internet we can find so much new music. You can but you are likely to focus only on what you are familiar with and will spend way too much time in front of your screen riding the keyboard. 2 hours of a good dj will have more of an impact than a month online and you will very likely be turned on to sounds you would never have discovered on your own.
Find out what college radio broadcasts in your area and get involved with them. The college I dj'd at for 17 years had an incredible and constantly growing music library. i learned so much simply browsing the stacks. More than I could dinking around online.

I can't stress the amount of incredible bands I've found just hanging out on SputnikMusic, Youtube, Pandora, and blogs... All ranging from Post-rock, to post-metal, to folk. lol. I still can't find anything better than Brand New, Have A Nice Life, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor though...

Internet is only as good as the level of exposure one opens themselves to. So it could be like opening the floodgates or it could simply be a wash. On the same token, 'underground' radio is similarly hit-or-miss - some will immediately take to it and be open to more, others won't. To say nothing of streaming radio, of which foreign stations or neglected genres are rather easy to find with even just a basic search.

Directing rage at the Top 40 sort of feels like preaching to the choir, though - if interest is what drives consumer openness, most listeners of mainstream music aren't interested (whether that's out of buyer's apathy or the industry doing it by design), those that are on the fence need some pushing because they're overly cautious about jumping into unknown waters, and those with a passion for it already have been open to more for a while.

The method by which it occurs varies in effectiveness for everyone.

I've tried to get into underground/independent music but a lot of the stuff is so hard to buy/download because its hard to find.

It really is, which can get extremely frustrating.
But, it's so worth it when you get into it, and once you get your hands on a really hard to get album, you feel victorious. Plus, it's incredible music.
I just use Amazon, or go to the band's site to figure out how to get the music.
