  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Tatting looks fascinating to me, too. I also picked up a video on Hardanger (sp?), which I think is beautiful. I went to a local knitting, homespinning type of store and the woman behind the counter said this to me, "I just don't understand why someone would want to undo fabric. It took so long to make the fabric and then to undo it....."

I thought to myself that she must have never seen a piece of Hardanger! LOL

Understand completely that if want to do something and can't drives me crazy until I am able to. I also have been trying to learn Tatting. Have the shuttle and instruction books and thread but have not been able to get it right. Maybe will try cro-tat first then go back to the shuttle. If anyone learns how let me know have many questions.......

I tat - it's not expensive to get started. You can purchase a shuttle from Michaels, Hobby Lobby, or JoAnn's - or find an online store - I like Handy Hands. Most shuttles are less than $4.00. Thread is relatively cheap, considering how much (or how little) is needed for a project. If you'd rather learn needle tatting, you can purchase a tatting needle - I think they are a bit more than the shuttles, maybe $9.00 - but most of them come with a book of instruction and a few patterns.

I'm partial to shuttle tatting, although I have purchased a cro-tat kit (needle and book) and a needle tatting kit (needle and book). I have tried them and I dabble with them from time to time, but shuttle tatting is my favorite and that's the one I use to make items.

You can use a shuttle and thread - or a needle. If you are near a Hobby Lobby, Michaels, or JoAnn's they usually carry the shuttles - many different types. Online you can go to Handy Hands Tatting - hhtatting.com and purchase needles, thread, and shuttles as well as pattern books, instruction books, dvds and more.

If you have any craft experience with crochet, you might find needle tatting easier for you to understand. I'm biased toward shuttles because that's how my grandmother tatted.

If you choose shuttles you can find Clover shuttles relatively easy at stoes like Michaels, Hobby Lobby, and JoAnns. Hobby Lobby also carries some of the Handy Hands shuttles - I like the Moonlit best.
