  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

As a Baptist, real scripture Study only confirms what Baptist Doctrine says

Perhaps I was reading you too literally. If you deleted the modifying phrase "as a Baptist" and "real" and said something to the effect I made a sweeping examination of the scriptures from a Biblical and systematic theological perspective and felt that The Baptists (probably need to specify which synod) best represented a doctrinal statement that I held, It would have been clearer.

As it is constructed currently it sound like, "As a good Baptist, I took the doctrinal statement and matched the supporting proof-texts so I know Baptists hold true beliefs."

The text JWs use is quite different from the oldest new testament manuscripts. I can not and will not dialogue about the JW religion or their beliefs in this thread, as I believe it would be inappropriate here

Non-sequitur!

The point of my example was not to build enthusiasm for witnessing to the JWs. But to demonstrate how deep Bible study can expose powerfully-held false beliefs. False beliefs set up in a proof-text format, by supposed experts.

Reading it and understanding it is 2 completely different things.

I like to use a Paralell Bible for study or a website that lists out different
versions.

I listen to it on tape, and study it.

Do you study, just read, or neither?
Secondly, as Church Tradition plays an important role what resources do you use to study tradition?
Personally I study and study hard. My area of specialization is the OT paganism in direct opposition to Yah and dealt with by the prophets all over the OT. Being able to recognize those pagan doctrines continuing to pop up in Christianity as corruption just as it did in the OT helps a lot IMO.

Granted the reason I got so heavily into study was because I met a high priestess of Ashtoreth about 30 years ago. The conflict with her got me studying what scripture had to say about the things I learned 1st hand.
