In a sense, in my opinion, yes they do. Only science hopes to prove a source for all that exists so that scientists can take credit for finding it.Do religion and science attempt to show the same thing?
Many are also interested in whether it's true or not. They don't just want to believe; they want to know.I dont know, didn't you bring that up as an issue. I would imagine that a person is not going to have that religious practice or spirituality in their life unless they believe it true. I merely stated that religion, spirituality or whatever you wish to call it can add some extra meaning or benefit to a persons life. That Professor Polkinghorne said that we need to consider both science and spirituality to get a complete picture. Now this may be his belief and you have a different one. But all that can be said is that for some or many they believe that religion or spirituality adds to their life and gives them a richer experience. Whether its true is a personal thing because to the people who believe they believe that its true and real and you cant deny them this right.
That sort of defeats the purpose of faith. You have to remember what you or science demands as proof to determine if something is true is not going to be the same criteria for many who believe. They have a personal reassurance and a confidence that it is true from other means which cannot be tested with science. Afterall this is what the bible states so this is also a truth that is fulfilled. As the bible states faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. So for those who just dont want to believe and need evidence will find it hard to receive the assurance that God gives by trusting and taking his word by faith. Many are also interested in whether it's true or not. Which goes back to what I said: many people aren't satisfied with faith. They care about whether it's true or not. So they claim.
It's faith so it is based on trust. If it had the sort of evidence that science demands then it wouldn't be faith. But that doesn't mean it is blind faith. To the believer there are certain testaments and evidences that confirm things and make them confident that what God has said is true. Even to the point of trusting their life to God.Could be why, faith beliefs don't do well under objective scrutiny.

why does it come across, in the above quote, that all science wants to do is to prove things wrong rather than prove to be possible? I thought science tries to prove cures rather then say there is NO cure.. I thought science tries to prove exploration rather than say there is NO exploration.. I think that is what is meant when the Holy Scriptures says that with GOD ALL things are possible. Why be in a science that tries to prove that what is already in existence is 'wrong?'This is a quote that is from a fairly recent book :
"Religion deservedly comes in for more criticism in its failures than science does in its, because religion claims for itself the ability to know what's true, whereas science claims for itself only the ability to quantify the probability of a thing being wrong. A genuine truth arrogantly asserted - that is, without so much as a guess at the likelihood of its being false - is a most pernicious kind of falsehood, far worse than a mere mistake, because it alienates people from it."
I have some questions on the philosophy of science.
Firstly what is its proper circumscribed domain, what can science study?
Jesus never said that He was God, true..... But He did say John 10:30 "I and my Father are one."Spiritually speaking.
Jesus never claimed that water was really wine.
He expected others to figure it out themselves.
Jesus never said He was God.
He said...make your own observations.
