• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

My physician just told me I need to be on disability, so did my pDoc, and tDoc. I don't believe in disability; but I do need help. I'm only 19 and I know that my pride is a problem, and I guess I have more severe problems than I would like to believe but I can't see how I could accept disability, especially at my age. I guess if all my docs and mental health people think its what I need, I will. But I can't help thinking there are people out there who need it more than me..and I don't want to take something from somebody who needs it more. *sigh* idk what to do!

I was just wondering how many of you or your spouses are on disability for bipolar disorder and severe depression.

Yes disability is for sick people, so it might well be there for you!

I have been on disability for about 7 years, I've been sick for 12 years the first 5 years I only hated the world and wouldn't receive any help from anyone, my wife convinced me different.

I suppose it helps with medication, some bills and doctor payments, however I still don't like it, numbered, that is what I call any social intrusion into my life, I'm glad it will all perish one day - I hate it!

The biggest drag is that constantly filling out of forms and proving to the suspicious others that you are really disabled.

But I suppose one has to stand above all that!

Be blessed.

I have been on disability since 1996ish. I hated it felt like a "slug on the government dole" have tried twice to get off of it now and return to work, but I am so thankful it is there. You do not take it away from anyone. It is best to apply now before you are 21! Major difference (at times) with that. I would encourage you to try and know they will turn you down and you will have to appeal and fight on until you hire an atty and go to a hearing (usually), but it is worth it. If your doc, etc are in support, do that. Many do not understand that you can work after you are on disability. Right now I can earn about $900 a month and not impact my benefits from disability at all.

I'm not on disability, but I was going to be going on it earlier this year when I was going through some treatments that were making it impossible for me to work, go to school, do much of anything. I was shocked, too, when I heard that it might be a good idea for me to go on it, since I'm relatively close to your age. However, I managed to get past without going on it and now I'm doing much better. But if your treatment team is telling you that it would be a good idea, listen to them. There is nothing shameful in being on disability, no matter what some people might say/insinuate. It's just a way of coping, getting by with illnesses that can't be magically fixed.

I am on disability for OCD and depression along with other physical health problems. Have been since my late 20s. I am still hoping to be healed enough to be able to work again even if only part time and even if I still have to be on disability. Don't be ashamed if you need help. God bless
