Difficult names

Would you have a problem using a name for your child that was:

a spouses ex-love interest's name

the name of someone you disliked as a child

the name of a political leader you disagree with

the name of an infamous criminal

the name of a parent/step parent

why/why not?

when i was pregnant with my daughter faith, my husband wanted to name a girl carrie after a friend of his that had been killed. while i didn't have much problem with that- it is also my moms name and we are not close and i didn't want her to be able to say the baby had been named after her.

a spouses ex-love interest's name Yes, Id have a problem with it, it wouldnt happen.

the name of someone you disliked as a child depends on how much I liked the name

the name of a political leader you disagree with - depends on how much I liked the name

the name of an infamous criminal if we had the same last name as said criminal then I wouldnt use it, but otherwise, Id go with the first name if I liked it

the name of a parent/step parent I dont like this practice unless the name is used as a middle name, otherwise I think it gets too confusing, IMO

Luckily my SO doesn't have an ex whose name I'd ever consider for a child...but otherwise, no I would not.

If I liked the name well enough I would give my child the same name of someone I didn't like as a child or a political figure that I didn't agree with.

Well my SO's name is Charles (called Charlie), but since our last name isn't Manson..I'd be willing to use it

I've thought about using my mom's middle name if I were to have another daughter..I wouldn't use a parent or step parent's first name tho.

...my husband doesn't have one. So I've never thought about. It'd be a bit weird though.

People I know tend to affect the way I see a name. I can't see myself liking the name of someone I disliked.

Sure. A first name. It's not like they'd be named after him/her.

Sure. As above.

I really want to do this and my husband does not. There are a couple of names which are family names for me, as in, several people in the family across several generations have been called these names. I really like it. It would make me feel like my child had a name connection to my family as my children will be taking my husband's surname. My husband doesn't like it because he thinks it would put pressure on the child to follow in the footsteps of its namesake. I disagree. There's one name in particular I hope to talk my husband into eventually.

the name of someone you disliked as a child Definitely wouldn't use it, would be too hard to get past that negative connotation. Eg I have never known a Melissa I liked, so there's no way I would use it. ETA: no offence to any Melissas on here LOL, I meant IRL

the name of a political leader you disagree with I can't see it being a problem, unless you shared the same last name

the name of an infamous criminal It would depend on how common the name was (and obviously not if you shared the last name). So eg I might use Martin (Bryant) but never Adolf (Hitler).

the name of a parent/step parent No way, child needs their own identity. I once knew a family that had 3 generations with the same name. So it was Big M, Middle M and Little M. Using it as a middle name is different though, unless you didn't get along.

That one was tough for me. I loved the name of my spouse's previous interest but she was such a mess that there was no way I'd use it.

We ended up using the formal version of the name/person I disliked but that is because it is a beautiful name and I love the nickname that comes from the middle.

I can't even think of names that would go with either of those.

We were originally going to use variations of our parents names but ended up going a different route.

I wouldn't use Dawn detergent when I was living with my ex because his ex's name was Dawn. I have out grown that thank God.

I love the name James for a boy but in high school for most of 10th grade this guy James had a HUGE crush on me and asked me to marry him about once a week - so now I can't use it for a son if I have another one.

I would never use my husband's Ex's names for a daughter, even more so since both serious girlfriends before me had the same name.

I'm also not big on naming a child after someone else middle names are one thing but I want my kids to have their own names. Not to have to live up to their name sake.

Having been a teacher for many years, I found when we were considering baby names that my experience narrowed the field considerably. For example, when you are constantly dealing with Payton and can't wait for her to get out of your class, the last thing you want is a Payton at home.

My husband wanted to name our son after an uncle that committed suicide. I was like, uh, no....talk about a dark cloud over your head all the time. We ended up compromising and had a derivation of the name as a middle name.

Kids always want to know why you named them what you did. I just wanted it to be a good reason. I was named after Beth in the book Little Women. My son was named what he was because God impressed the name on me in a dream.

Kind of a side note- I'm named after my Dad's childhood friend, but they never dated as teenagers... I don't think I would, though.

I would never use either my ex name or the name of a spouses ex. I am dh first girlfriend though so he doesn't have any exes. I have an ex though, so no, we wouldn't use that name.

As for the other questions, I would use the name if I liked it enough.

I would never use an ex's name, that just seems really disrespectful to me... It just wouldn't fly here...

My son's middle name took a while to get used to for me, because it is the same name as my ex-step father who was abusive to my mother. But it is my DH's grandfathers name and is very meaningful to him, so I got used to the idea and I think it suits him really well. My mother also took it amazingly well, but I think it's such a common name that she had to get used to it on other people anyway...

But for first names, I prefer them to have their own names...
