  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Did NASA really go to the moon?

This profile is probably right. Whatever the case they like to distort the truth.
yeah distorting the truth like one of the magic bullets that Oswald supposedly, shot, I don't believe in every conspiracy story that comes down the pipe, but I am certianly not someone who lets the media make my decisions for me, as to what the truth is. have another glass of fluoride water everything is gonna be OK!

This fits the personality of a conspiracy theorist to a T.

I didn't go into some of the other characteristics of conspiracy theorists but some of them are

- Absolute relenlessness.

They go on and on relentlessly about the conspiracy over and over again no matter how much evidence is presented against it or how much point by point it's disproven. They will simply ignore anything that strikes a blow against the theory by asking the same question again and again. If the responder answers that question 99 consecutive times and on the 100th if they say "I've already answered that" or something similar then the conspiracy theorist considers that a victory and that the reponder "couldn't answer the question."

- Unable to answer specific questions or answers questions with other questions.

They will often ignore questions that the answers would disprove or discredit the conspiracy theory.

- Rely on common phrases.

One of their favorites is "once we have eliminated the impossible whatever is left (no matter how unlikey or ridiculous) must be true."

- Jumping to conclusions.

They put one and one together and get one. They often contest any official report on an event even without the qualifications to do so. They focus on anomalies and coinsidences and think that they mean something profound. Always.

- Try to prove one conspiracy theory by introducing another one.

They will introduce red herrings into the mix by trying to link one conspiracy theory to another one and so on.

- They are unable to discern good evidence from bad evidence.

They will attack any expert or authority that disagrees with the conspiracy theory and instead substitute their own "experts" that usually lack peer review or have been rejected by their peers.

- Insulting.

If anyone dares to question the conspiracy theory they are automatically labeled "ignorant," "brainwashed" (their favorite), or "mindless sheep." If a person starts to really pound the theory into the ground the conspiracy theorist will "step it up" and really attack the responder with serious personal attacks and insults.

- Extreme fear of government or authority.

What is always in the back of their mind is that this is going to be the night that a Black Ops helicopter swoops down and takes them by gunpoint to some secret CIA interrogation facility or prision inside their local mall.

- Inability to withdraw.

This is a big one. They will remain to endlessly and relentlessly argue about the theory to infinity. What they ultimately want to have is the last word (which will often be an insult) to anyone that dares question or challenge the theory. Being right to them is job #1.

- Conspiracy theories are everywhere!

They can not accept that bad things just happen sometimes and that any bad random event can happen to anyone at any given time.

- Inability to step back and examine the theory and its flaws.

They can't use common sense to see the massive holes in the conspiracy theory or the extraordinary means that would be required to achieve it. They just accept it as fact without ever looking into it.

- Use the tactic of "volume = victory."

They will try and overwhelm people with very long posts or speeches that usually get accepted because it would take forever to disect it. When someone does take the time it's usually all fluff and no substance. There are a lot of words there but no ideas.

I bet that I could invent a conspiracy theory, post it on a blog, offer no evidence to back it up, and within 15 minutes it would have its first hit. Within 30 minutes to a hour it would be posted on another blog or website and passed off as truth.

But this is the most damaging point against the conspiracy theory and the conspiracy theorist - if this is supposed to be top secret, guarded by the government so hard that people will die if they knew it or uncovered it, then how does the conspiracy theorist know it? That goes to the exaggerated sense of self importance and their desire to let everyone know it.

Well there is this thing called the budget. And we can't afford it.

We really couldn't afford it as it was. But seeing how we had to beat the Ruskies, we did it.

It was a bad reason for it. But we can say we did it.

Yeah, NASA really went to the moon. The question we should ask is, have we really not been back to the moon? It's been 40+ years.
