Devotions Together

Now that we having some great foot traffic in this forum is anyone else interested in doing a devotional together and sharing with each other.

I tried it a few weeks ago but no one joined me: http://www.christianforums.com/t1045677-our-daily-bread-devotional.html

There are a number of different devotional links via the DEVOTIONS links on the navbar.
I am pretty flexible about which one to do. Any takers?
I would be willing do this above my regular devotionals so to have a common point of referrence.

What all would we be required to do and does denomination matter?

I wouldn't mind trying to get to study the Word more often than now, just let me know.

My thought was we could all decide to do the same devotional.

Then post our thoughts about it.
Our thoughts may reflect our denominational views.
But it is NOT meant to be a debate exercise.

Just each sharing our thoughts and experiences based on the scripture and theme of the day.

Maybe we can come up with a list of devotionals and do a poll to see which one to use.

Here are some I would suggest we consider:
Our Daily Bread
Streams In the Desert
Spurgeon's Faith's Check Book
Bible Pathway
Today In The Word

Neat... Maybe we could do a different kind of devotion every week... like maybe use one site's devotionals or whatever for a whole week daily,
then switch over to another and go from there. That way it'll stay interesting and not get boring.

I did read your thoughts to the devotions you were reading. However, no one joined in, and so I felt funny replying! How silly of me!

I would love to do this also. I have no preference to what devotional to use. I am open and willing to dive in and swim in God's words!!

I like Spurgeon's stuff. But, I prefer not to do the ones where it is mostly a story or song lyrics. I like it when they stick to explaining the passage rather than trying to illustrate it with a story that most times has no parallel in my life. Personal preferences I guess.

This sounds like a great idea. I love Spurgeon and Chalmers (although he's not a choice), and the Bible Pathway looks pretty interesting. I'm just checking it out tonight for my first time.

Thus far it would appear there is a strong preference to Spurgeon and Bible Pathway.
Should we pick one or go back and forth on a weekly basis just to keep things fresh?

Today's Spurgeon's Faith Checkbook said:
He that humbleth himself shall be exalted. (Luke 18:14)

It ought not to be difficult for us to humble ourselves, for what have we to be proud of? We ought to take the lowest place without being told to do so. If we are sensible and honest, we shall be little in our own eyes. Especially before the Lord in prayer we shall shrink to nothing. There we cannot speak of merit, for we have none; our one and only appeal must be to mercy: "God be merciful to me a sinner."

Here is a cheering word from the throne. We shall be exalted by the Lord if we humble ourselves. For us the way upward is downhill. When we are stripped of self we are clothed with humility, and this is the best of wear. The Lord will exalt us in peace and happiness of mind; He will exalt us into knowledge of His Word and fellowship with Himself; He will exalt us in the enjoyment of sure pardon and justification. The Lord puts His honors upon those who can wear them to the honor of the Giver. He gives usefulness, acceptance, and influence to those who will not be puffed up by them but will be abased by a sense of greater responsibility. Neither God nor man will care to lift up a man who lifts up himself; but both God and good men unite to honor modest worth.

After the Passover meal, Jesus began praying: Father, the hour is come; glorify (honor) Your Son. . . . I have glorified (honored) You on the earth. . . . I have manifested (made known) Your Name to the men which You gave Me . . . and they have kept Your Word (John 17:1,4-6). All true believers should unite in glorifying the Father and Christ our Lord, and in keeping His Word.

Jesus continued praying for all who would believe on Him, that they may be one, even as We are One (17:20-22). Jesus and the eleven disciples then went to the Mount of Olives. Jesus knew that Judas would soon arrive with the religious leaders who would lead the hostile mob and the Roman military to crucify Him. Within hours, all of Jesus' followers forsook Him.

Satan is the accuser of our brethren (Revelation 12:10); but it is comforting to know that Jesus sees far more in His followers than we see in ourselves or in each other. He knew His disciples would leave Him; but He continued to love them and forgive them.

The difference between the weakest of Jesus' disciples and the worldly, unsaved person is revealed in Jesus' prayer to His Father in heaven: I have given to them the words which You gave Me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from You, and they have believed that You did send Me (John 17:8). Notice the order: The words which You gave Me, I have given to them, and they have received them. This emphasizes that faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God (Romans 10:17). Faith and spiritual discernment are imparted as we daily meditate upon the Word of God. As the psalmist recorded: A good understanding have all they that do His Commandments (Psalm 111:10).

Jesus also prayed to the Heavenly Father to keep through Your own Name those whom You have given Me (John 17:11). How encouraging it is that His prayer included everyone of us as He prayed: I have given them Your Word. . . . They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify (keep holy for God's service) them through Your truth: Your Word is Truth. . . . Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on Me through their word (John 17:14,16-20).
