  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I see a potential danger with devotionals becoming the pursuit of emotional sensation. I think the natural emotional reaction to contemplation of God, his holiness, his love for us, or the sacrifice of Jesus to be sufficient..
Thanks for your response

What is your favorite devotionals?
My Utmost for His Highest (Chambers), and Morning and Evening (Spurgeon) are 2 of best IMO. I also get "the Word of the day" by Fr. Basil in my email, which is also good. Bible Portal has many to choose from.

I really like the Akathists used in Eastern Orthodoxy. They follow the format of an old Kontakion, an ancient style of long form hymn. The melody used in Russian, Ukrainian and Bulgarian churches, which I think dates from the 18th century, is hypnotically beautiful.

Thank you for the suggestion. I will definitely be looking into these as part of my prayer routine.

(side note: I am looking at praying the Akathists to St. Varus for those who reposed outside the faith. "St. Varus, pray for those in the great beyond" (St. Cleopatra is another saint to ask for intercession for those who died outside the faith))

Blessings
