Colossians 1:13-14 ESV

“He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

When we believe in Jesus Christ to be Lord and Savior of our lives, God the Father delivers us from the domain of darkness (the control and power of sin over our lives) and he transfers us to the kingdom of his Son Jesus Christ, in whom we have redemption. And Jesus Christ redeemed us (he bought us back for God with his blood) that we might now honor God with our bodies. And forgiveness of sins includes deliverance from bondage (addiction) to sin.

Being saved from our sins is not just forgiveness of our sins so that we can escape hell and so we can go to heaven when we die. Being saved means we are being set free from our slavery (bondage, addiction) to sin so that we can now live holy lives, pleasing to God, and so that we can now walk (in conduct, in practice) in a manner worthy of (fitting to) the Lord Jesus, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work (see Colossians 1:9-12).

This means that we no longer walk (conduct our lives) in sin. Sin no longer has dominion (control, power) over our lives. Sin is no longer our practice, but righteousness is now our practice, by the grace of God, and in his power and strength. We have forsaken (walked away from) our lives of living in sin and for self, and now our lives are surrendered to Jesus Christ to now walking in his ways and in his truth and righteousness.

Colossians 1:15-20 ESV

“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.”

Jesus Christ is not only the only Begotten Son of God, but he is God, the second person of our triune God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And he is our creator God. He is the one who formed us in the wombs of our mothers. All things were created through him and for him. And that is amazing when you think of all the things that Jesus (God) created. And he is absolutely sovereign and in control over all that he has made.

We, as genuine followers of Jesus Christ, who have surrendered our lives to the Lord Jesus, who have forsaken our sinful lifestyles, and who are now, in practice, walking in obedience to his commands, are his body, the church. For, the church is not a building nor a church denomination nor a civic center nor a social club nor an institution of man nor a corporation under the state, although that is what many people have made it into, in practice.

We, who have trusted in Jesus Christ to be Lord and Savior of our lives, are his church, and he is our head, not men. And he is to be the one directing our lives, not humans, and not marketing books on how to grow “the church.” Now we are to have human shepherds to lead God’s people, but they need to be people who are truly following Jesus Christ and not other humans and their marketing schemes and worldly methods.

Colossians 1:21-23 ESV

“And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him, if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.”

When we believe in Jesus Christ with genuine God-given faith, we are crucified with Christ in death to sin and we are raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. Sin should no longer be our master, but now Jesus should be our only Lord and Master. We should no longer walk in sin but now in righteousness and holiness for the glory of God, in his power and strength.

Doing evil deeds (making sin our practice) should be a thing of our past, not in our present. This is not saying that we will be absolutely perfect, for we are still living in flesh bodies, but “not perfect” should never be used as an excuse for continuing in willful, deliberate, and habitual sin in direct defiance to God’s commands and to his will for our lives. We once lived that way, but now that Jesus has changed us, we are to no longer walk in sin.

When we were still dead in our sins we were separate from God because of our sin and we were not capable, in our own flesh, of attaining God’s divine approval and his righteousness. But by faith in Jesus Christ, because of what Jesus did for us on that cross in putting our sins to death with him, we are able to be made right with God in order that our Lord might present us as holy and blameless and above reproach, i.e. as those whose lives are separate from the world and unto God who are becoming like Jesus.

But we have a part in this. We can do nothing in our flesh to earn or to deserve our own salvation, but part of our Lord’s redemptive plan for our lives involves our cooperation with him, and it involves our surrender to him and our obedience to his commands. But all this is empowered by him, and even our faith to believe in him comes from him, but we must appropriate it to our own lives, in his power and strength.

So, our salvation is contingent on our obedience to the Lord. We must continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that we heard. We must continue to put sin to death, to not allow it to have dominion over our lives, and we must continue to walk in holiness and in righteousness and in obedience to our Lord and not in sin if we want to be certain of our salvation and our eternal life with God.

Blessed Assurance

Frances J Crosby, 1873
Phoebe P Knapp, 1873

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
O what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.

Perfect submission, all is at rest
I in my Savior am happy and blest,
Watching and waiting, looking above,
Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.

This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior, all the day long;
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior, all the day long.

Hello and good day. Your party was very interesting and thought provoking. However I have 1 question and 1 objection to what you said. My question is this. Are you saying that believers can actually walk in their daily lives without any sin at all? If so, sick a belief would go against dozens of passages that clearly teach that we will always struggle with sin in this life. My objection is this. You made a comment that salvation is contingent on our obedience to God. I would urge caution in saying something like this. Not only is it proven false by many passages of scripture that teach the permanence of our salvation, but it is no different than the beliefs of lordship salvation and works salvation, both of which are popular teachings in the church today that are not only unscriptural, but also extremely dangerous. If I have misunderstood your words, then please forgive me for that false judgment. If I have not misjudged your words, let us have a conversation about it in love and respect. God Bless.

This is what I wrote:

This does not say we will never sin. It says we are not to continue in making sin our practice, in deliberate and habitual sin.

Now with regard to your objection, please read the following Scriptures:

Galatians 5:19-21: Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Galatians 6:7-8: “Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.”

Romans 2:6-8: He will render to each one according to his works: 7 to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; 8 but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury.

1 Corinthians 6:9-10: “Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.”

2 Corinthians 5:10: For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.

Ephesians 5:3-6: But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.

Col. 1:21-23: And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach— if indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, was made a minister.”

Romans 8:13-14: “So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.”

1 John 1:5-9: “This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

1 Jn. 2:3-6: “And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. Whoever says ‘I know him’ but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.”

Hebrews 10:26-27: “For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries."

1 John 3:4-10: Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. 5 You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. 6 No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. 7 Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. 8 Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. 9 No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God. 10 By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.

Matthew 7:21-23: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’"

And that is just a few of them, for there are many, many more such passages of Scripture in the New Testament which teach that our salvation from sin is conditional on our obedience to our Lord and on us no longer making sin our practice. For our salvation is freedom from slavery to sin and empowerment of God to live godly and holy lives in obedience to our Lord Jesus Christ.

The verses you quote make a distinction between the saved and unsaved, or the righteous and unrighteousness. The saved do in fact commit all the sins we are warned about, however the blood and sacrifice of Christ completely covers those sins. Our salvation is secure and permanent. There are MANY passages that talk about the permanence of salvation. I know of not a single one that says we can lose it. It is God himself who secures or salvation, not our obedience.

Sorry. I didn't realize I was in the wrong section. I thought all threads were discussion threads. I won't post anymore. Sorry for the confusion. Have a blessed day.
This is a discussion thread but it is not the debate section. There is a difference. On here we share our quiet times with the Lord for the encouragement, exhortation and strengthening of the body of Christ. It is really not the place to get into a debate.
