  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

How do you measure that? what units do you use?
-
The quality of 'goodness' is self-authenticating is it not?

- What is your natural sense?
+ I suppose the "units" I would use would be degrees of consciousness. To what extent does a person manifest goodness ("sattwa") to the utmost extent? To what degree do his actions contribute to transcendence?

Are they indistinguishable from non-existant?
- God only reveals certain things to those he cares about through love.
+ To elaborate: some things you need to figure out on your own. When your mind is prepared, then God graces you with His understanding. I am fortunate enough to have but an inkling of this understanding.

Gibberish. You've moved on to 'transcendance' and you've never defined 'spiritually enlightened'.

Would it not be easier to type "no"?

"...be on the look out for something to occur. IMHO."

You are really going out on a limb with this prediction, lol. Could you possibly be more vague?

When I post this post, we will shift one year into the future!

It will take approximately 12 months!

The more subtle a thing is, the less liable it is to define.

I will say one thing: "chit."

Would it not be easier to type "no"?

No....

Well, the war on drugs is on the tipping point of coming to an end in a few short years, humans have never been more connected by the likes of facebook, and Americans are waking up to the political sham that is government.

Can you not at least admit that society is at a major transition point?

Yes, hopefully.

humans have never been more connected by the likes of facebook

True, but the Establishment Presidential candidates still got virtually all of the votes. There still exists the deeply ingrained tactical mentality of voting for the lesser of two evils.

and Americans are waking up to the political sham that is government.

Only a small number. Most Americans are happy with big government and can't even imagine one that is much smaller. Many Americans would be pleased with even more government.

America, if anything, is following the path of Western Europe.

Can you not at least admit that society is at a major transition point?

I hope that it is, but I doubt that it is, unless you count an end to the war on drugs as "major" all by itself. I think that the trend is actually the opposite overall -- towards even more government.

The OP:

It is this kind of bullying abuse of what is good and esteemable in man that gives religion a bad name. If you want to preach about the evils of the world there are better targets than sincere ethicists. IMO faith gorups ought to recognise the likes of Sam Harris and other constructibe thinkers rather than hand wave sanctimoniously. What is at stake but the stability of collective consciousness as it tries to make it's way in life? IOW as the Jews say don't throw stones into the well you get your water from.
