  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Some have cast doubt on David Coppedge's credentials, claiming that he is not a scientist. Presumably, this is based on the fact that he rejects the theory of evolution. I can see no other reason. A brief outline of Mr Coppedge's career can be found on the link.

Mr Coppedge's "crime" is to have a different viewpoint from evolutionists. This is in spite of the fact that evolutionary theory is continually shown to be wrong and that evolutionists can't agree on how to interpret the data that is presented to them.

Mr Coppedge has a B.S in physics. Why this makes him a non-scientist is a mystery to me. Then again, everything to do with evolutionary "science" makes no sense to me.

Generally a 'scientist' has at a PhD or least a Master's degree, and often has served as a Post Doctoral fellow, or has a professorship. Not that it would have to be so.

It may be that people think David F. Coppedge is not a scientist because he doesn't fit the bill, in a manner of speaking. If a scientist is a person with at least one advanced degree who conducts research that advances human knowledge in an area of the natural sciences, then Coppedge is not a scientist. For one thing, he has only an undergraduate degree (Bachelor of Science). For another thing, he is not engaged in research—and never has been. Even for the 15 years he worked at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, he was a computer specialist and systems administration team leader (1996-2001; 2001-2011) who couldn't be bothered to keep up his competence through further training (Powers 2012). Nor has Coppedge been engaged in any research whatsoever in the years since then; all he does is promote and maintain an anti-evolution web site, Creation-Evolution Headlines.

You're a scientist if you do scientific research, typically as a job. If you have a degree in science but don't do research, you're not a practicing scientist. If you've never done research, you've never been a scientist. Someone with only an undergraduate degree in physics is quite unlikely ever to have done meaningful research, nor is he likely equipped to do research.

I think he’d be taken more seriously if he had a higher degree than a B.S.
