The one tip I've learned (at least in theory - lousy in practice, because the explorer in me always leads me astray) - after finishing off a boss, BACKTRACK AND BANK THE SOULS AT THE LAST FIRE.

Do not proceed hoping to find one and then lose all your one-time allotment of boss souls to a bloody plague rat

Even if you die on the way back, you reduce the risk of losing the souls entirely as you have a shorter distance to trek to do the retrieval.

I am getting slowly better at it, although I'm pretty sure I picked the wrong class. Started as a thief, but am apparently fonder of just armouring up, equipping a huge axe and tanking attacks.

I've owned the game for some time, but am determined to push through it now the sequel is out - and also because a critic I respect pointed out how similar it was to Castlevania Symphony of the Night. Which I absolutely love.

I just got to Darkroot Garden. Found a halberd, which is really helping me (as is my new set of balder armour). Have also upgraded them a couple of times.

Is that the one you get for killing the dragon? I've missed some of the things in the Undead Parish church, I think. At the very least I need to have a word with that guy who keeps firing magic missiles down at me -_-

I also haven't levelled in a while, which is starting to worry me. Currently level 22 as I ground a few levels out in the Undead Burg.

I'm really trying hard not to use walkthroughs for this game, because I'm quite liking slowly uncovering the map / gameplay items & mechanics, but SOOOOO HAAAAAARD :'(
