I wonder if the Republicans understand that all of their efforts to hamstring democracy will be exposed eventually. Historians will be writing books, articles and PHD thesis papers for decades to come on this subject.

Do they actually think they will come out looking good in the eyes of history?

In new petition, GOP candidates and state Rep. Toth ask Texas Supreme Court to REJECT Harris County votes cast in drive-thru lanes (100,000+ so far), calling it illegal curbside voting reserved for sick/disabled. A new argument after earlier bid to end drive-thru voting failed.

Judge rejects Trump campaign lawsuit over Clark County mail ballot counting

In his order denying the petition, Judge James E. Wilson Jr. wrote that the campaign and Nevada GOP lacked standing to bring the case.

There was no indication of wrongdoing on the part of election staff or that someone's vote was not being lawfully counted, he said, and no indication there was a problem with the signature-checking system.

Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford applauded the decision, saying his office argued on behalf of Cegavske's office.

"The president’s deliberate attempts to undermine Nevada’s elections have failed yet again," Ford said in a statement on the decision.

Harris County, Texas' most populous county and majority-Democratic, erected 10 tents to expedite the early voting process as a way of allowing people to cast ballots safely during the coronavirus pandemic. They were also in place this summer before the state's primary. Noting that point, Hanen, a George W. Bush appointee, asked plaintiffs, "Why am I just getting this case?" He later said that the suit was not timely and that "this has been going on all summer."

The suit was brought by Republican activists, who argued the move by Harris County Clerk Chris Hollins, a Democrat, was an illegal expansion of curbside voting, which is permitted under Texas law.

Cumberland County officials received an email this week from the Trump campaign requesting highly specific details about the county’s ballot security.

The email, obtained by The Sentinel, went so far as to ask for the address and room numbers of ballot storage locations, and requested that the information be sent to the Gmail account of a Florida-based Trump operative.

County officials said they have not responded to the request and do not intend to, according to the county commissioners.

...

But the details O’Shaughnessy asked for in her email do not concern ballot verification; rather, they are specific physical security details for ballots and voting machines.

These include information on “the location(s) that ballots are immediately sent to when polls close (including address and room number)” as well as “the individuals who transport the ballots to the location(s).”

The campaign is also asking for “the time(s) when are ballots are transported to canvass site,” information on any security provided, and “the best point of contact for each storage location(s) of the ballots.”

538 update on where things stand.

Of those 404 bills, we count 179 that are already dead — either because they were voted down or weren’t passed before a key deadline. Another 137 bills have not yet progressed beyond the committee stage, and at this point, that inaction bodes poorly for their chances of passage. On the other hand, 63 bills are still worth watching, having passed at least one step of the legislative process (with those that have passed two chambers closer to passage than those that have just passed committee). That leaves 25 bills that are already law (back in March, this number was only six); four states have even enacted multiple such laws.

The courts have overturned Trump on over 60 occasions. They have also acted on some voter rights issues. The courts have decided NOT to legislate as much as Democrats would prefer. CLEARLY, the Congress has a role and should exercise that role by passing legislation. It just isn't right to constantly expect that courts to overstep and put themselves in place of Congress.

The reality is that states have the right to limit absentee voting. States can have almost no early voting. Early voting isn't required in any way. Those who cannot vote on Election Day need to have the ability to vote by absentee ballot as has been the case for decades. States are NOT required to have off-site drop boxes. All voting and drop offs can be limited to designated areas. And certainly absentee ballots can be restricted to those that arrive at the designated voting site by Election Day.

There is one Election Day.

That is allowed. There is no right to vote a month before, there just isn't. Sure, maximizing the opportunity to vote is a good POLICY idea. And Congress and legislatures should pass such legislation.

Is it allowed to have no early voting on Wednesdays? no early voting on Sundays? The Supreme Court is unlikely to overturn such rules, unless the legislators stupidly made clear in hearings that the purpose was to limit black votes.

Yes, there are laws being passed that are discriminatory in that their purpose is to limit the number of black voters or young voters. Courts can act on this.

I'm not sure that this is generally the case in FL. White elders and white Republican military voters will be affected in similar ways to black voters.

OBVIOUSLY, there are specific parts of new laws that are discriminatory, and those will likely be overruled by the courts.

In Texas and Georgia, polling places are removed from black areas to remote locations far from public transportation. In some Texas counties only the county seat has a polling place, hours away.

In a Louisville primary, the large urban area had one polling place for 700,000 voters.

And of course most red state districting will be challenged. Stats show even now that states with 65-45 R-D splits will have only 20% D representation in Congress and statehouse.

Cheating should be unconstitutional.
