Clam shells are harvested from the ocean floor, for the purpose of creating a pearl. After being removed from the ocean water, the clams are put through a short surgical process, where a grain (or other substance) is inserted into the shell of the clam. The shell is then placed in a special container and lowered back to the ocean floor.

At first the clam shell ignores this grain of sand. But, over time this grain of sand irritates the clam shell, and through the irritation process a beautiful pearl is formed. Harvest time comes. The clam is retrieved from the ocean floor and with great care the pearl is taken from the clam. The clam with the shell has fulfilled it's job and is discarded-thrown away.

Now I have a beautiful pearl!

I am not a scientist or oceanographer, and I know pearls are made of other sea creatures as well. While this illustration is quite 'simplistic' I have used this illustration to serve a specific purpose several times, here is one!

When my daughter was in HS, I shared this illustration with her, ending with 'you will be a lovely pearl some day'. When she joined the army, I reminded her of this lovely 'pearl' she would become! She called me from Iraq, and said 'mom, I am so irritated about everything, not just once, but all the time'. 'Whooo' I voiced, 'I know it hurts too, just remember, this is what it takes to be a 'pearl'. 'Ouch mom, but what if I don't want to be a 'pearl'? I replied, 'you don't have to become one in just one day', she moaned, 'hummmm'! I continued, 'Live just for today and tomorrow will take care of itself!
"Mother-daughter" experience is true!......Restin

Any thoughts?

The clam/pearl analogy may be seen in the creation of man in "His Image" as written in Genesis 1:26,27. Like the grain of sand 'hidden' in the clam shell so 'His image' (the spirit of God) is 'hidden' in the man made out of dust.

When Adam sinned, the 'irritating' process began. As this grain of sand does it's work, over many years, the 'irritating' pain produces a harvest that will result in the 'pearl of great price' that God is forming according to His design. This world, and all that which was created with His hands, is destroyed because the purpose for wich the earth (clam & shell) was created has been fulfilled, completed.

What remains - the 'Pearl of Great Price'. Not only that, this 'Pearl' has many children, made 'in His Image' as well.

Matthew 13:46 Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it. KJV
Revelation 21:21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; every several gate was of one pearl: ...KJV

The form of godliness must perish that the Pearl will be saved.
