  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

My first foray into philosophy of mind was not the most pleasant experience. This was probably due to the fact that I had no idea of where to start. None-the-less I remain fascinated by the mysteries of consciousness. Only this time I'd like to re-start the search for answers from a better vantage point. With that in mind, does anyone have any books they'd recommend on the topic? Preferably those that integrate work from across philosophy, neuroscience and cognitive science?

I recommend Daniel Dennett's Consciousness Explained. The title promises more than it delivers, but it's still fascinating from beginning to end. One of my favorite nonfiction books of all time.

E. F. Schumacher's A Guide for the Perplexed is an introductory book of philosophy from a perspective of religious humanism. Material about the nature of consciousness is woven in through the entire book.

And Douglas Hofstadter's Godel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid is tough to characterize, but everyone who reads it agrees it's brilliant.
