  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Are there any verses that confuse you?

Here is one I am wondering about...what do you all think Jesus is saying?

As for the person who hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save it. - John 12:47

Seems to support OSAS-type of thinking, but there are so many other verses that contradict OSAS, so what does it mean?

I think it probably means that it is not Jesus 'the man' that will judge them, but God...the next few verses seem to explain this...

Whoever rejects me and does not accept my words has something to judge him: the word that I spoke, it will condemn him on the last day, because I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and speak.

Why don't you read homilies on John by the church fathers. Better to ask the saints than this bunch of sinners (of which I am the worst).

Saint Augustine, tractates on John
Saint John Chrysostom, homilies on John

John.

Ok, here are St Augustine's thoughts on the verse in question:

Ok, I'm even more confused now...can you translate?

Ok, I found this nice explanation...

http://www.ccel.org/c/calvin/comment3/comm_vol35/htm/ii.ix.htm

So Jesus was being open and inviting of all in his present speech, and not judging anyone at the time of His mission on earth, but He does say there will be a judgement at a later time.

The freaky thing is that this commentary is by John Calvin!! (I thought Calvin was against personal "choice" determining your salvation.)

DefensOrFidei, God give you Peace.

Think about how St. John uses the term "judgement" and "judge" in other parts of his Gospel. It doesn't have the same meaning that we tend to automatically assign to it and as I have seen done in some of the responses.

God Bless,
