What sort of communion hymns do you sing in the Catholic services?

I wish . . .

Alas, it is not in most parishes. . .

Generally, only those that do the Tridentine Masses or Latin Novus Ordo Masses, do that type of music anymore.

Think of it this way: At present, we are in a desert devoid of these beautiful hymns and only hear the newly composed songs while the beautiful hymns aren't used, but when the pendulem swings back to beautiful music once more, we will appreciate it all the more just from the forced absence.

Our choir sang this on Palm Sunday at communion. It melted me so much that I looked on the web for a copy to play here at home. This is the version that inspires me. And yes, it was sung at a OF liturgy.

Mozart's version is great but I think Byrd's overall is more solemn and captures the feel of the Eucharist better.

Well, I wasn't sure which Ave Verum we sang on Good Friday, but it's the Byrd one.

Not one of my favorites by a mile...I probably sneaked twice as many breaths as I should have...it's a big fall from the choir loft to the floor.

Now I had suggested Panis Angelicus...

Bread of angels...

Cesar Franck or the one that seems to be done more in Catholic churches. I like them both.

I remember playing Cesar Franck's at a memorial Mass for Mother Teresa, accompanied by a bassoonist. Such a beautiful, mournful instrument.

Yes, most of the time; it depends upon the area in which one lives. It is more concentrated in some areas, regions, or states than others.

Yes, exactly the sort of music that our schola sings - also earlier music than Byrd. The choir is one of my main reasons for going to this particular church.

You don't have to go to a tridentine mass to get good music - our church has novus ordo mass but sung and mostly in latin, very traditional also.

You probably won't find a dry eye anywhere at your funeral mass if that hymn is played. It would be a grand finale as you exit this life, and witness to the inspiration that magnificent hymnody brings to one's spirit. Wish I could be there to hear all your choices!

I had an Irish neighbor who was murdered after performing a late night gig with his band in NYC. He was stabbed while walking to his car from the subway.

At the close of his funeral Mass, a lone flautist played, "O Danny Boy..."

Now that was an occasion where there wasn't a dry eye in the church.

I would be very happy with a Latin Novus Ordo and choir or schola that sings traditional hymns Latin or vernacular. There may be one by me, with a local "Oratory"* in my area; I believe it has a Gregorian Schola and very orthodox priests from what a good friend of mine has conveyed to me. I would love that. (I think that my girlfriend may have softened up me a bit towards this. Although, I am still very adamant about the Tridentine Mass. I am just happy that she's okay with the Tridentine Mass and would like to attend such a mass said by the canons of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest. I suppose that I am learning a bit of "compromise" or attempting to reach a happy medium.)

*The same Oratory of the Oratories founded by St Philip Neri and made famous by Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman. (Author of the Development of Christian Doctrine. )

St Philip Neri is a cool saint, I like him.
Our schola sings gregorian, too.

As a couple you always influence each other, that's good.
