If you want to live according to the Word by faith, don't waste your time reading his commentary, which is so full of errors apart fron Luther that it does not earn the right to be read, If anyone wants to discuss this, I will be happy to spend more time on this book or any other Christian subject. In Christ's love, RichardSchultz

Enjoying your high appreciation of Luther, could you give us some ideas what you are talking about? A clearer representation of your remarks could very well lead to some discussion.

Tell us who puts out People's Bible Commentary to begin with. Is it totally WELS or does it involve a number from LCMS as well? Are there any in this series you would recommend? Romans? Galatians?

You have to admit, topping Luther on Genesis is a tall order for anyone.

Looking forward to your reviews. Welcome.

Peace,
Cosmic

Glad you found your way to us, RichardSchultz!

I wasn't familiar with the Genesis commentary, but I found some info from the publisher and from Amazon.com. It looks like its part of a series of translation/commentary books published by WELS. The series looks very interesting to me, because I was just lamenting last week (on one of these threads around here) that I wished someone would make a more conservative book-by-book, paperback translation/commentary of the Bible than the "Daily Study Bible" of William Barclay (who was a liberal Quaker, and it shows in his exegesis).

Tell us more about Genesis? Why do you have issues with this commentary? Are there any in the series that you do recommend? If so, I may look into them.

On doing more research, I found that the entire series is also sold through Concordia Publishing. They even have a book-of-the-month club, where you can get one of these commentaries each month for 41 months. Most interesting.

I may get Romans to see what I think. That's usually my test-book for any Bible commentary or book study series.

I'm waiting for the Concordia Commentary on Genesis to come out. I believe that Dr. David Adams is working on that one. (He's either doing Genesis or Exodus, I forget which.)
The only one I have now is Revelation by Dr. Louis Brighton. Probably the best Revelation commentary available.

Although you can't judge a book by its cover, you get some idea by its author. Do a search on the author at amazon.com. Panning has one that really. It has a "search the book feature". You can look at the index and read the excerpts and of course....reviews, if any are given. It is going to be difficult to see how his Romans is not influenced by his former work. Both deal with election.

Here's hoping to being very surprised.
