Christian entertainment, specifically videogames. Can/should we play them?

Hi, I became a Christian early last month and since then I haven't played any videogames. I didn't really miss them in a big way until recently. Recently I have been wanting to play some of the games I own. I've been arguing with myself about whether they're good for a Christian to play...

Then, I searched google for answers and found this post: https://www.jeffwofford.com/?p=1754

I would like to discuss the question and the post here.

I read through the link and found it to be incredibly good.
It could be applied to anything, not just video games.
The answers are excellent and it would be difficult to add anything.

The fact that you're thinking about this is a good sign.
Always let God guide you.

What I could say is that if you try to cut something out before God tells you to, it might not work. You'll know when it's time.

I wouldn't cut it out completely, and I'd avoid violent games. They're truly demonici n nature.

So this is an interesting topic I've been thinking about recently, myself.

Before I started walking in the faith, I was the kind of person that played video games (the violent kind) every single day after work, after school, etc. And I loved them, and justified the playing of such things by saying that it kept me out of trouble, and that I was maintaining friendships over multiplayer, etc.

However, the more I grew in the faith and as I started reading the Bible, the Spirit pricked my heart over this issue. Now, what I think is not an opinion that I expect every Christian will feel regarding this, as some don't struggle with this as much, or are otherwise comfortable in their Christian liberty (not liberty to sin or dishonor God), but free to take rest or pleasure in something that doesn't directly tie to the worship of God.

So what I concluded in my heart is this, which is very similar to what the writer of that article you posted said: when I play violent video games, in my heart I feel that I'm committing murder (even if it is indeed cartoon violence), and the reason is because I still believe that thing I'm killing to be a living person (though it is simulated) and in my heart seek to destroy that very thing out of hatred, or at the very least, competition. Now, to me, when I thought of it this way, is a very wicked thing: because people cannot act in real life how they act in video games, otherwise people would never play them. For this reason, I feel that it is against the faith and is deliberate sin against the commands of God.

Also, when a person plays video games, whether violent or not, (as the writer said), a person tends to more often than not get sucked into them for hours and hours on end, to the point of sheer idolatry. I've noticed there is passive idolatry and aggressive idolatry (one is the worship of things through dedication and commitment of time, the other is worship of things by directly bowing the knee and pledging allegiance); many video games often ask you as the player to pledge your sworn allegiance to fake and unreal characters. In my mind, how is this any different than worshipping a graven image? Secondly, when I dedicate hours of my life to something that produces nothing for me in the real world, nor helps anybody else, that not only takes away time I could be spending worshipping God/praying, but also time I could be using to serve my loved ones, neighbors, friends, etc.

I admit that I still struggle with this, and is a sin I have trouble repenting of. Even this past week I redownloaded games I own to play them, and played them for almost an entire day; and then my conscience got the better of me and I redeleted them (I own them and can't get rid of them because I own them online), so the temptation is not something I can just throw away or get rid of directly. I prayed, asked forgiveness, and then sought to repent from the evil in my heart. I also notice that my personality is affected (because of the intense violence, drama, and evil that I'm exposed to) through playing games; primarily because when a person's mind is not set on God or the things of God, and his mind is set on something else, that something else will always lead a person away from the good things of God.

So, just some thoughts of mine on this. Take it or leave it. And God bless, friend.

Thanks, I agree it's well thought out and written. I was cutting them out completely. I'll avoid games I feel are pointlessly violent and excessive.

I will say I don't get a "kick" out of the violence and I mostly like the settings and story in some games

Thanks for your thoughts on it. I'm sort of in the same situation, I have games downloaded on my computer. I haven't deleted them yet. I even had the same thought about maintaining friendships over online games. One of my friends from when I was in school is someone I played with and I haven't yet told him about possibly choosing not to play games anymore.

For me, I don't know if I'm making excuses as I've always played as the "good guy". Defending people, defending myself etc and choosing the "good" paths. I will keep thinking on this. God bless

I play them. They shouldn't be your whole life. Consider multiplayer games in which you're part of a clan or a team to get some benefits of exercising what it means to be a good teammate or leader, if you're not talented enough or physically capable enough to play traditional team sports.

Post no. 5 is a great post.
Nothing like the advice of a Christian that is going through the same issues.

As to getting a kick out of violence...
A kick is not necessary. Everything our eyes see remains with us. We become desensitized to violence to the point of it having no effect on us. Psycho horrified everyone who saw it in the 60's....it didn't even show anything. Look at what we could view now with no problem.

But God has to convince you....

LOL
Nobody's getting killed !

Tell that to the pawns! It may be less graphic, but taking a piece is symbolic of violence and death. Besides, there are plenty of video games that are less violent than chess, for example Stardew Valley.

I could be wrong but isn't some desensitization of violence a good thing. I'm mainly thinking back to when I did boxing for a bit and I got a big shock when the punches started landing (on me). I think a lot of people react this way. It's not good to be fearful of violence in some ways. How will we defend ourself if we panic at the first sign of danger? Sorry to go off on a different topic.

I actually own Stardew Valley, do you think this is something I could play? Doesn't it have some surreal elements to it beyond the farming etc? That's another reason in some people's eyes to avoid videogames. I think

Yes, it does represent persons.
But do you think of this when you're playing?
Death, I mean.
I never thought of chess as being violent.

Someone showed me a game being featured on YouTube,,,,grand theft auto. I thought that was very violent because it represented real persons and not these imaginary kingdoms.

But I don't know too much about this.

I scanned the article. I personally play Lord of the Rings Online. The game most certainly can take up a lot of your time. I only play this game because of my love for the work of JRR Tolkien. Tolkien's writings were used by God as a stepping stone to Christ in my own salvation experience.

That being said, as a new believer I would not encourage you to play games at this time. I have known the Lord for 30 years, but for my first 5 years I was wholly immersed in prayer and Bible study. After that I sought all the opportunities I could find to minister and serve the lost and the body of Christ. My game playing has come in my sunset years. I try to limit my time in the game to one or two hours depending on how complicated the quests are.

You need to know the Lord for yourself, and the game won't help.

By the way, that author of the article said he was a Christian first, gamer second then a programmer. It would be great to create a game called, King of Kings Online, where role playing as pastors, missionaries, teachers, members of the body could be used as a discipleship tool. If a game was made like that, wow, that could do some real good.

You're talking about two different concepts.
Defending yourself is good.
Not being afraid of pain so you could defend yourself is good.

What I'm talking about is that we Should be shocked to see a knife entering a person, even on TV.
Instead these days,we could look at this and not even flinch. This is bad, it brings us all to a level of being less civil and accepting violence to the person which should not be accepted in a civil society.

Some things Should be shocking. The fact that they aren't is a bad sign.....deterioration of elements that make us human and created in God's image.

Even for non-believers.

Exactly, and we were warned of this in Paul's epistles and from the words of Christ. "Iniquity shall abound, and the love of many shall wax cold."

For God, it's always about what is in the heart. A person could never murder another person physically, but if he even hates another without cause, to God that is the equivalent of murder; which speaks to a holiness our society no longer can fathom.

My opinion on Christians and secular entertainment, is that it's totally okay for a Christian to enjoy it. There's nothing wrong with one playing a video game like GTA. You aren't actually carrying out the sins in them. It's all fake. You just have to be careful to not actually indulge to them in real life. If you can't trust yourself to resist temptations, then don't play something that could bring them up. There's plenty of more appropriate video games, too. Stardew Valley, Overwatch, BOTW, Terraria, etc.

To God, this is not the case. To God, it's about the heart. To God, even the thought of foolishness is sin. To God, if a man even looks upon another woman to lust after her in his heart, he has already committed adultery.

God does not judge just the actions of a man, but the motivations and intentions as well. If the intent of the heart is wickedness (which it is), then God judges that for what it is, even if that heart never acts upon the wickedness within it.

You may be an atheist without hope, but do not cause this newly found Christian to stumble as a result of your lies, please. You know not what you're saying.
