I read all of the manga. I loved it, but it does have some nudity and sexual situations (no sex scenes, but there is talk about sex) in it. The situations are brief for the most part, but they do occur often. It does have a good plot and the characters are great, though. Also, the manga adds the f-word in random places. The f-word was not in the original. I haven't seen the anime. I heard that it's cleaner than the manga, but still deals with some of the same sexual situations.

The anime is almost complete in the US (on DVD). The first half of the show is essentially character introduction with a bunch of fanservice to 'keep things interesting'. The second half of the series deals with much more seroius subject matter. It looses most of it's sexual humor and examines the consequences of falling in love with a 'robot'. The only other anime that examines the human/robot relationship on this level is Ghost in the Shell.

The ending is amazingly complete for an anime series. All the plot lines are tied up and everything makes sense. I was a little worried about my purchase in the first few DVDs cause of all the fanservice, but in the end I was very happy with the series.

And GITS: Stand Alone Complex is a much better choice of anime. The first half caused me physical pain in parts - the fanservice is literally overwhelming. Honestly I find some of it hard to classify as fanservice, since the entire point of many of the episodes is to set up fanservice scenes. At that point do you call it an episode of pure fanservice?

The second half is better - which means it approaches good. Asking too much of it is dangerous, but it's vaguely entertaining.

If you had problems with Chobits fanservice, I warn you to stay far away from Mahoromatic. It's another boy meets robot show, which at times has a compelling story, with a fair amount of humor thrown in. I would dare say it would be touching if it weren't for the fact that it was ruined by un-needed breast shots and sexual humor. This is a show that I would define as 'ecchi'(which is sort of a step between fanservice and hentai, for those who don't know).

Thanks for the warning. I actually use Ecchi to describe a show that constantly relies on fanservice instead of, well, anything really.

I actually preferred Mahoromatic over Chobits... don't know why though...

As for ecchi, if I remember correctly the word means the letter "h" as in hentai. But the fanbased americanized use of the word is more like fanservice (also the way I prefer to use it)... read a long discussion about this once so there's bound to be other oppinions but that's my 2 cents.

The most "ecchi" anime that I've seen is definately Golden Boy. It should definately be rated at least 16. But it is also the funniest "ecchi" series I've ever seen. I laughed so much my stomach hurt. Still wouldn't really want to recommed it...

I always saw ecchi as being nudity for story/comic reasons. To me, fanservice refers to 'panty shots' and things of that nature.

Anyhow, IMHO Mahoromatic could have been better, but the pointless nudity ruined most of the goodness for me. Plus I hated the nonsensical ending to Mahoromatic. However, Chobits had one of the best done conclusions to an anime that I have seen.

Even so, I still like Mahoromatic. I always feel so sad at the end of each episode when it says "Mahoro will stop functioning in XXX days."
