Please provide support for this claim. To the best of my knowledge, it is an urban myth, long since falsified. Apart from anything else, the idea that this weight is the soul departing is absurd...why would a soul weigh anything?

There are two problems with this statement...

1. If you assume that the soul is fleeting therefore the body loses weight, then that would mean that the soul is made of 'matter'.

2. When I don't want my brother to lift me up, sometimes I force myself to stay on the ground. I don't stop him from lifting me up, I just make it harder for him. I don't know if you know what I am talking about, but I don't add extra pounds on myself, I still have the same body mass.

Once again, I'll ask for support for this claim. As far as I can find, it's based on a series of very slipshod experiments performed by one person a hundred years ago.

Sorry, but if it does have a physical presense, then the soul would be capable of being detected by science.

You are claiming that there is a soul. I really see no evidence and no need for a soul, our physical body does everything already without the aid of a soul.
Your claim that there is a soul is because we weigh more when we are alive, you know what else I think, that when we are sleep, we weigh less as well than when we are awake.

Edit: or perhaps is the other way around now that I think of it....

Seeing as that page is a segment of the full chapter in the book, I will withhold absolute judgment until it can be determined if there is any additional info.

There is more to being "human" than just having our DNA. The cultural side of it is at least as important as the genetic component. This is clear when you examine the numerous cases of children who are raised from an early age by animals. Even when they are rescued as older children, they never develop the hallmark traits of humanity and can only be considered "human" in a genetic sense.

I'd like to make something very, very clear in this post before some idiot here decides to spout off some stupid accusation that I'm indirectly advocating genocide or some of the uglier forms of cultural imperialism against people of other cultures. All human cultures have in common complex tool use, art, symbolic language and their own well-defined concepts of moral norms. All of these traits are noticably absent among humans who are raised by animals from a very young age.
