Celibacy and why?

What's the take on this thread on abstinence enforced by one partner? Not quite celibacy, but many of the same challenges.

I agree....

yet they are not quite the same....

By the way, if/when that happens with a married couple (one person enforcing abstinence) it is not Biblical and is a "sin" against that wife or husband.

Without knowing specifics, one married partner enforcing abstinence on the other would be "dereliction of duty," for lack of a better term.

It makes no difference how you put a label on something to some people: if you say October 5th 1957 VERSES 10/5/57 either way its all in the eyes of the beholder and to try to read into something is very telling of someones character. I appreciate the fact that here together atheist, agnostic, christian and the like have come together and supplied me with ample light on the subject. I would just hope one isn't turned away at my label of "christian" and label me among others to be a representative of Christ in a negative way. I come in peace and I hope they know it and in fact they have been the least judgmental. No rocks have been thrown and living in glass houses should cause worry of rocks.

So I suppose it is to be understood that celibate and marriage is any iffy situation. All depends upon the circumstances that brought them to this point. I suppose after a divorce or something of the nature, one being a christian they have the option to stay celibate and draw closer to Christ if they feel convicted to live that lifestyle.

I once worked with a lady and her husband was bound to a wheelchair and this medical issue caused them to not be intimate, it hurt her at first, but HER LOVE for him stood the test of time, which is what a marriage should be founded upon.

The word CELIBACY is derived from the Latin, which only pertains to the Religious Orders of the Priest in the Catholic Church.

What Paul was speaking of is not the same.

Paul spoke of abstaining from sexual relations, using himself as an example, but also made it clear, the abstaining was a Gift from God Himself.

The word Celibacy today, has lost all it's original meaning, now it is understood whosoever does not have sexual relations at any time, or for any period of time.

It is even understood to be the cure for Homosexuality.

Therefore we have to take what Paul said in a different light than that of secular society, and the Catholic Church.

Paul emphasized that Celibacy should be practiced until the person could no longer contain, that differs greatly from the Celibacy of the Church, which is a VOW.

The best understanding of the definition of the word would be, Paul spoke in the 60"s AD and the understanding of the Catholic Church only came about in the early 1500's.

They are two different definitions and should not become confused as to where they become synonyms.
Christians should know better just what the Bible does and does not teach.

Does this get easier with time OR how long have you been celibate "if not too personal to ask"? The loneliness seems like it would be much to bear.

Hasn't gotten easier yet, but I try to not think about it. Though I am only nineteen. I decided to commit myself to celibacy about three years ago.

Ok, i gotta re-wind with this one to center on what in the world i was talking about....

It is WRONG to deny sex to your husband or wife, thus rendering them a "forced abstinence" as a way to "punish" them or to "abuse" them in some manner.....

THose verses posted previously addressed this...

Wow I commend you in your efforts that's tough OR it would've been tough for me at that age. May God strengthen you and you just glide on His wings and draw closer each and everyday of your life. A life totally sold out and committed to serving Him deserves a "atta boy"

To tell you the truth, I strive to be as accurate as I possibly can be, when speaking about the things of God, (ie, the Bible) and I would hope, other Christians would be the same.

I do not like ambiguity when having a discussion on things pertaining to Biblical understandings.

There was a question as to how Celibacy should be practiced by the Christian.

It needed to be understood by the Christians reading this thread, there is a marked difference as to what Celibacy is and what Paul was speaking (Teaching) on, it's called clarification of the subject.

When a discussion is taking place and someone does not fully understand what the other is actually saying the discussion can and does go off into all kinds of directions, and only because of ambiguity.

My understanding is, if I have something to say in a discussion about the things pertaining to God as a Christian, it is of the utmost importance to be as precise as possible, and use the pertinent Scriptures to validate my claims.

Language and word meanings have and do change over time, but when we as Christians begin to take the secular definition over a Biblical one when it comes to understanding what the Bible is saying, we must endeavor to be as accurate as possible.

We are to influence the World with our understandings and Beliefs, not the other way around.

I see. That sounds reasonable enough. I did find it interesting after reading your post that the word "celibacy" never does actually come up in the New Testament. It's always the Greek word for abstinence.

Does this mean; every time a husband or wife wants to have sex, the spouse is compelled to comply?

No, I do not believe that at all. For one children are naturally celibate and they naturally exude the joy of life. We love kids for their simplicity and innocence. O I know they still have all the flaws on a smaller scale, I had five of them myself and will have eight grandchildren by September, but the world is so blessed to have these little ones around us. 1 Corinthians 7:7 says: for I wish that all men were even as I myself (celibate). But each one has his own gift from God, one in this manner and another in that (married).
I therefore think celibacy is good if you are called to it by God and I also think married and sexually active with your spouse is also a very good and blessed thing as well. Children can be such wonderful fruit of any marriage if God chooses to give them to us and I do consider myself blessed for that. But whether married or celibate we must love God and each other in purity for God blesses all of us with His great love either way.

It depends how sharp the population decline is, but we would have to rethink our economic systems in order to avoid societal disaster.
