Also Jimi covered Like a Rolling Stone ......... but I prefer Dylans version

I think one of The best Hendrix covers is Johnny Be Goode ........ Hendrix makes his guitar sound like a wild stalion at the end ........ TREMENDOUS

I know. I listened an album the other day called "London's Burning" that was a tribute to the Clash, and they had some Rap group cover "Capital Radio London". IT WAS AWFUL.

My boyfriend has an album that has about 20-odd different bands/people doing a cover of 'Stairway To heaven' - trust me, after a full day of THAT album (which included Rolf Harris doing a wobble board cover of it), you NEVER EVER EVER want to hear that song again - Led Zeppelin or otherwise!

I hated that day, it killed my appreciation of Led forever...

I have a cover of London Calling by a group called Captain Tractor or something like that...it wasn't too bad, but could never beat the original.

of course people write their own songs.

You just have to look outside the mainstream, where everyone plays manufactures music and sings manufacured lyrics.

these days, 'artists' (i don't think of them as such) have so little talent, they must do covers, copy lyrics, and even downright copy a song for money.

It don't think it was just one song either. From what I gather, a group of Christian artists (including Delerious etc.) got together and made a whole lot of covers of U2 songs. For about a month a Christian radio station here in New Zealand got bombarded with these tracks, which almost made me go insane (none of them, imo, were as good as the originals). Ironically I have never heard a single U2 song (i.e. original) on this radio station, despite the fact that the band members are Christians...

As for bad rips of old songs, I usually don't object too much, as long as they are well-done (although I generally prefer the originals). The prize for the worst though, has to go to DJ Sammy: a euro-dance remix of 'Boys of Summer' ? I don't know what was more painful - the remix itself (I love the original version by Don Henley), or the fact several of my friends actually thought DJ Sammy wrote it...

Heh, this is why I listen to mostly Hanson. They only do covers when paying tribute in concerts (most people do that though), and on their Christmas album. Of course, they even wrote about 1/3 of their Christmas album, which is less than I can say about most.

Gordon Bennett, even people in the 70's were writing to the music papers to protest against 'Rock Around the Clock' being re-issued in the UK in 1974 and there were bands like Showaddywaddy and Mud doing stuff like "Under The Moon Of Love", "One Night", and Ray Stevens doing a karaoke version of "In The Mood" where he clucks like a chicken through it. Just be glad you weren't born in the 70's. I've got stuff that's gonna drive kids more nutty than the idea of Marilyn Manson and Stacey Orrico duetting together for a remake of "Put Your Hand In the Hand Of The Man Who Stilled The Oceans" - actually that could be a GREAT idea for the customary novelty record to be issued for Christmas this year (maybe to go to the tsunami aid).

It's all to do with lining the pockets of those 3 piece suited fat cat cigar sucking Jewish funny uncles at the major record companies, so that they can re-invest the money in useless original talent like Hoobastank, Franz Ferdinand, The Libertines, and any other band that some music journalist with a defective liver tells the public who to like.

Next decade we're gonna see remakes of club artists bopping to 'Smells Like Teen Spirit", "Everything I Do", "Achy Breaky Heart" and maybe a boy band doing "I Don't Like The Drugs But The Drugs Like Me". Ahhh, the good old 90's.

Ah yes, the "In The Name of Love - Artists United for Africa" CD...I didn't mind it - most of the covers were passable but none of them except Grits took their song and really made it sound original (Chris Tomlin's version of Streets sounded like he was singing to a backing tape it was so similar)
