I don't believe this, since the Bible doesn't tell me that Joe doesn't accept any text as authoritative other than the Holy Bible.

Hmm. I was about to say:

"I'm having a go at believing only things that are found in the Bible".

However, it turns out the Bible doesn't mention my decision to do this, so I guess I can't.

There certainly isn't any shortage of mockers, doubters or skeptics in this forum.

Er. The entire point of deeper fellowship is for all of us Christians to get together and have fellowship, and that includes getting to know each other, and learning to appreciate the diversity of people who follow Christ. You're welcome to follow Christ in a way different from mine, but I think it's sort of assumed that you'll at least be polite about it.

It occurs to me that the post you were responding to might have been taken as insulting, but it wasn't meant that way; if any offense was given, I'm sorry.

the thread that i started was to find out if someone says they don't believe in God if they really did at one time or do...and yet no one (except for a couple) have answered my question... everyone has been arguing over beliefs of the Bible and how they interpret it...if you want to do that do it over the aim or something like that... this thread was based on what my question was about good grief... i didn't want it to get people to start fighting over this... man....anyways i just wanted people's opinions over this... if you still want to express your opinion about it then i am willing to take it...thanks

I think that many people really genuinely don't believe in God, and many more genuinely believe in something else, which we *don't* believe in.

I mean, when you say you don't think Thor exists, does that mean you *really* believe that there's a big Norse guy driving a chariot led by two goats around the sky, throwing his hammer whenever there's thunder, but you're just "denying" it? Of course not!

To many people, the God we believe in sounds just as silly. I think they're wrong, but I don't think they're lying, not even to themselves.

My point exactly. When I say I do not assent to the existence of Eostre, Siva, or Loki, I am not necessarily denying some subconscious desire to believe in them, much less assenting that they do, in fact, exist. That's why I made those delightfully didactic gadfly posts.

I think a lot of people have only limited experience with the broad variety of people and experiences that lead to someone self-identifying as "an atheist". It's easy to stereotype and generalize, but it makes it hard to witness effectively. For most atheists, a Christian who doesn't judge them or condemn them would be a welcome kind of "miracle". A lot of them are very surprised the first time they meet a Christian who doesn't come across as a hypocrite; I think one of the most important things we should be doing as a community is learning more about what other people believe, so we can communicate with them better.

The question is, are we interested in leading people to God? If so, we should perhaps remember that the Bible itself says that, to people who do not have the holy spirit, Scripture is meaningless. If we want to convert people, we'll have to do it the way the Bible says to - leading by example. Scripture is for us to learn about God; it's not a club to hit people with, nor a sword.
