Books you are reading (or are wanting to read)

Takin' a week off.

I've already got 41 hours in this week and still have Thurs & Fri to go but even though a lot of time is spent driving on the DC & Baltimore beltway it's not too bad a deal--beats factory! But I am looking forward to being off.

Our wedding anniversary is Saturday (17 years) and a sitter is watching the boys so we're going to spend the day out--and probably end up at a bookstore somewhere...

Update time folks...

I am currently reading Adventures in Missing the Point by Campolo & McLaren. It's pretty good, strangely written since one guy writes a chapter then the other talks about the points the other missed .

I started the Irresistible Revolution by Claiborne but stopped...I was kind of scared to read more at this point--I should say scared in an exciting sort of way, guess I was afraid of what I'm going to discover, so I'll finish it soon.

I have have just skimmed through "The Kindom that Turned the World Upside Down". As I read through it I realized that I remembered more of it than I thought, so I ended up reading through it pretty quick. Tonight I am planning on starting the first volume of the Ante-Nicene fathers in preparation to write some articles for my website. http://nipto.org

That is some fairly heavy reading...it's interesting that many traditions call upon the ante-nicene fathers for support of their stance-I know the RC & EO use lots of passages from the A-N Fathers.

I am focused on scriptures, with the aid of the strongs Concordance.
My son gave me a book by Frank Peretti called the Visitation, but I have hardly cracked it.

Reading and answering e mail and visiting Christian forums takes an hour or two each day.

Most of my time now is spent caretaking the 40 acres weere I live. clearing pathes, burning brush, building planters and watching the leaves change color.

I dont watch movies or TV much ether. Fellowship in Christ comes first. I do scan the New York times each morning just to keep watch on the signs of the last days. It rarely has anything that grabs my attention.

What I look for these days is words from brethren about what they see God doing in their lives.

There are 10 volumes, but I will be focusing primarily on the first two centuries. Things start getting a little wacky after that point from what I understand.

I've got old paperback copies of CS Lewis's sci-fi series. I've read Out of the Silent Planet before, but not Perelandia or That Hideous Strength.

I read lots of sci-fi, but have never read any of Lewis' stuff in the genre. I've read some of his other work...maybe I'll have to check it out.

Is it allegorical...?

Yes, in a way.

His books are part sci-fi and part fantasy, I think more fantasy than sci-fi. The premise is that a man gets taken away to another planet, Mars, I think, and he finds beings so unlike earth beings that at first he has trouble comprehending what he sees. The beings help him find his way back to earth, of course.

But Lewis weaves his faith into them by making all the beings on the planet be in perfect communion with God and are in constant worship to Him, something the earthling doesn't have. The beings pity him because he comes from the silent planet, the planet whose beings don't have perfect communion with God and don't constantly worship Him.

It's like and unlike some of his other writings, more like the Great Divorce and less like Mere Christianity.

A book that i just finished is "Jesus Freaks". It is an excellent book. It is about martyers and it really strengthened my faith. A good read.
