'Unspoken Sermons' by George MacDonald by miles and miles and miles and miles. Here we have a latter day apostle John, yet not devoid of the zeal of Paul. Never have I found a book with an author more closely in line with the spirit of Christ. The writing is also phenomenal -- this is a Dickens who argues with such audacity and conviction, holding a priori judgments in line with a God of love, rather than the typical epistemic wishful thinking too common in Christian writing.

Here are his works online. This is the man C.S. Lewis owed his spiritual debt to (other than the rational arguments produced by Chesterton); he commonly referred to him as his 'master', and rightly so. Chesterton held the same lofty opinion.

Ah, I would also recommend anything by C.S. Lewis (Specifically 'The Four Loves', 'Mere Christianity', 'God in the Dock', and 'The Screwtape Letters'), G.K. Chesterton ('The Everlasting Man', 'Orthodoxy'), Soren Kierkegaard (anything and everything by this intellectual giant; from the little of him I have read, 'The Sickness Unto Death' reveals an excellent treatise on sin, and how it relates to ontology, apart from volition; if you can survive, go with 'Fear and Trembling' as well -- never have I read such poetic philosophy on faith before), and Dallas Willard ('The Divine Conspiracy', 'The Spirit of the Disciplines', 'Renovation of the Heart'). I would also recommend, if you are rationally strong in the faith, Friedrich Nietzsche's 'The Antichrist'. Why? As apologist Norman Geisler once eloqently stated, it is the advantage of atheologians to reveal the insufficient claims of religious creeds. Indeed, in order to argue our faith, we must be pruned of all superfluous and arrantly ludicrous theologies.

How about the church fathers themselves? There is a 10 volume collection of the Ante-Nicene fathers (33AD-324AD). I've found it nice to read the fathers as opposed to reading about the fathers. If you are looking for someone specific I recommend:

1. "On The Incarnation" by ??? (Ignatius or Athinasius)
2. "Divine Images" by John of Damascus
3. The writings of St. John Chrysostom. He was the most quoted of the fathers by John Calvin.

If you have a christian college or university near you, you can check their library.

P.S. BTW, for those who don't know the diff., Ante means "Before" and anti means "against." So Ante-Nicene means "Before The Council of Nicea."

A note on McGrath:
Any Introduction that he writes is about 600 pages long!

A good starting place is

Get your hands on some of Richard Holloway's work.

He's the retired Bishop of Edinburgh (Protestant) and his writing is amazingly intelligent. I've recommended his work to Catholics, Protestants, Methodists and atheists even - they've all loved it.

I have just finished John Piper's book "Desiring God". It was excellent.
An interesting book that I have read is "Becoming Orthodox, A Journey to Ancient Christianity" by Peter Gillquist

I am not going to recommend any materials for you to read. I read your profile, and from that I did a search of your denomination and church, and it appears that there is a Bible college near you. Call them and see what theologians they recommend and whose books they use for "Doctrines" classes.

That way you won't be studying anything that contradicts your beliefs.
