Out of curiousity, does E-sword work with the original languages?

That depends upon what your original language study consists of.

If you simply want to read the texts, and do simple searches, then it is adequate. Greek, Hebrew, Coptic, Aramaic, and Latin Bibles and dictionaries are available. As a general rule of thumb, these are public domain texts, and hence do not include the results of the most recent scholarship. The e-Sword resource may not contain all of the content that the original hardcopy resource contains.

If, OTOH, your usual mode of study resembles the five challenges that were in the November 2009 SBL Bible Software Shootout:

  • Give the parsing of a word and its meaning from a standard source.
  • Show all the occurrences of a word in the NT and LXX and show the Hebrew word which corresponds with the Greek in the LXX (if there is a correspondence).
  • Find all the occurrences of oi de in Matthew’s gospel followed by a finite verb within the clause.
  • I want to study a part of speech, e. g., demonstrative pronouns or interjections. How do I get all of the lemmas for that part of speech, get all the occurrences of those lemmas, and the results organized in such a way that I could write an article/monograph on that part of speech from the data?
  • I want to study the inflections of the Hebrew middle weak verb, and I want to see what the range of possible variations is for each of the conjugations (perfect, imperative, etc.) person, number, gender, and stem. This means I need to find all the middle weak verbs, find all their occurrences, and organize them in such a way that the variation of their inflections are immediately apparent. The goal of the data organization would be to allow me to write an article about the variations of the Hebrew middle weak verb.
The first two are fairly easy to do, using e-Sword.
The third one is more difficult, but doable, if one both knows Greek, and is willing to eyeball for the results.
The fourth and fifth one require the use of external supplementary programs and resources that are not publicly available.

Good take-along Bibles (remotely accessible) is Youversion.com (they have a TON of software versions. I have it for ipod and android plus I use the website) and Bible.is (Apps). The Bible.is has versions (+ audio) in different languages too. I also have the Lutheran Study Bible for Kindle (the ESV Bible by Crossway is currently free for Kindle...as of yesterday).

I agree E-sword is the best way to go. I've been using it for years and it is still an awesome tool. As for places for new ministers, sermonindex.net. The best thing you can do is learn from other men of God. I recommend Leonard Ravenhill to start.
