What is the connection between Pope Benedict XVI and the name "Olivia?" Literally right up until Monday our children were going to be named Isabella and Anessa, however just after delivering she insisted that our second girl be named "Olivia" supposedly in honor of Pope Benedict XVI. She's been too exhausted to talk for the last week so I haven't had the opportunity to ask her about it. I am a new Catholic, but far from ignorant about Catholicism especially the person of Joseph Ratzinger who I met a number of years ago and I have never heard of this before. Is anyone aware of a connection between the name Olivia and the Pope or why the name is "in honor" of him?

Olive is sometimes linked to the Benedictines (there is a group in the order called Olivetans). Now, Benedict XVI is not a Benedictine but has taken the name of their founder. Still the OliveTans are a small group within the order founded by a different person, but still Benedictines.

I've also seen it in reference to Pope Benedict XVI because if one believes the prophecies of St. Malachy our current Pope falls under the entry: "Gloria Olivae"

If you are not familiar with them St. Malachy is supposed to have predicted the line of Popes.

His prophecies are not offical and I've seen them debated as both true and false.

Some people are calling him that (Gloria Olivae) in part because of St. Malachy but mainly because he has taken the name to honor Benedict XV who was a man of peace. Benedict XVI has tried to link his time as Pope with an expressed desire to reach out to other Christians. Peace=Olive Branch. That's why some people use that name for him.

So those are possible links with the name.

1. Just it's relation to the name Benedict
2. St. Malachy
3. His expressed desire for unity and peace
