“Now as to the times and the epochs, brethren, you have no need of anything to be written to you. For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night. While they are saying, ‘Peace and safety!’ then destruction will come upon them suddenly like labor pains upon a woman with child, and they will not escape. But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief; for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of darkness; so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober.
“For those who sleep do their sleeping at night, and those who get drunk get drunk at night. But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation. For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him. Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 NASB1995)
We live in a day and time when so much of the church (or what is falsely called “church”) has gone the way of the world. And so many of them are buying into this “peace and safety” message while they are still walking in sin, still making sin their habit, believing that just because they made a profession of faith in Jesus Christ that salvation from sin and heaven as their eternal destiny are secured them by God. But if sin is still what you practice, and not obedience to God, you will not inherit eternal life with God.
[Matt 7:13-14,21-23; Lu 9:23-26; Jn 10:27-30; Ac 26:18; Rom 2:6-8; Rom 6:1-23; Rom 8:1-14; Rom 12:1-2; 1 Co 6:9-10,19-20; 1 Co 10:1-22; 2 Co 5:10,15,21; Gal 5:16-24; Gal 6:7-8; Eph 2:8-10; Eph 4:17-32; Eph 5:3-6; Col 1:21-23; Col 3:1-17; Tit 2:11-14; Heb 3:1-19; Heb 4:1-13; Heb 10:23-31; Heb 12:1-2; 1 Pet 2:24; 1 Jn 1:5-10; 1 Jn 2:3-6,15-17; 1 Jn 3:4-10]
But, as those who are of genuine biblical faith in Jesus Christ, because we were persuaded of God as to his holiness and righteousness, and of our sinfulness, and of our need to repent of (turn from) our sins and to now walk (in conduct, in practice) in obedience to his commands, we should not be those who are in the darkness, that the day would overtake us like a thief. We should be awake spiritually and ready for when our Lord returns, to go to be with him for eternity, because we died to our sins and we obeyed him.
But this is a warning and/or a caution to the church, the body of Christ, to not become spiritually lazy, and to not buy into the “Peace and safety!” message which so many are adopting today, believing that how they live does not matter since they made a profession of faith in Jesus Christ. This is a warning to the church to not be like those who are spiritually asleep and who live for the pleasures of the flesh and not in walks of obedience to the Lord in holy living. For if we walk by the flesh, we will die in our sins.
So, we need to be those who profess faith in Jesus Christ who are spiritually awake and alert, who take God and his word seriously, who believe what the Scriptures teach (in their appropriate context), and for whom obedience to God and holy living is our practice, and for whom sin is not our practice. For God has not destined us for wrath. But this is not saying that none of us will face his wrath if we decide to walk in darkness (in sin) and not in the light (in obedience to our Lord in righteous and holy living, by the grace of God).
And this is why we are encouraged in the Scriptures to be those who encourage (exhort, urge) one another in our walks of faith in obedience to our Lord, who warn against “wolves in sheep’s clothing” and their false gospel messages, who speak the truth of God’s word to the people, and not the lies, who teach and admonish one another in all wisdom, and who exhort one another daily so that none of us may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. For we are still human beings, and we need such daily encouragement.
[Acts 2:42-47; Romans 12:1-8; 1 Corinthians 12:1-31; 1 Corinthians 14:1-5; Galatians 6:1; Ephesians 2:8-10; Ephesians 4:1-16; Ephesians 5:15-21; Ephesians 6:10-20; Philippians 2:1-8; Colossians 3:12-16; Titus 2:11-14; Hebrews 3:13; Hebrews 10:23-25; James 5:19-20]
So, don’t get caught up in the lies which tell you that once you profess faith in Jesus Christ that forgiveness of all sins and heaven as your eternal destiny are guaranteed you, but regardless of how you live. How we live still matters to God, and that is why God had his servants and messengers give so many warnings to the church against getting caught up in the lies, thinking that how they lived and what they practiced would not impact their eternal security. For if sin is our practice, and not obedience, we will die in our sins.

Bombs are bursting. Night is falling.
Jesus Christ is gently calling
You to follow Him in all ways.
Trust Him with your life today.
Make Him your Lord and your Savior.
Turn from your sin. Follow Jesus.
He will forgive you of your sin;
Cleanse your heart, made new within.
Men betraying: Our trust fraying.
On our knees to God we’re praying,
Seeking God to give us answers
That are only found in Him.
God is sovereign over all things.
Nothing from His mind escaping.
He has all things under His command,
And will work all for good.
Jesus Christ is gently calling
You to follow Him in all ways.
Men deceiving: We’re believing
In our Lord, and interceding
For our nation and its people
To obey their God today.
He is our hope for our future.
For our wounds He offers suture.
He is all we need for this life.
Trust Him with your life today.
Be Alert and Sober
