This just in.....
I just won a battle that had been going on for 3 days with my 18 month old son. The corner area on the wall leading into the kitchen, there is an area where the paint/ plaster (b/c of years of wear and tear) is chipped. In some areas all you see is metal. Another area in question is this hole in the wall in the livingroom.
Now for the past 3 days he has been chipping away at these areas. I put up a gate to keep him with me in one room where ever I go (kitchen or livingroom) To keep an eye on him. My husband has been wanting to patch it up but hasn't had the time. We don't have the indoor plaster stuff. By mistake one day I bought the outdoor plaster, the stuff dries like cement.
Well while on the phone, he got away I thought he was with me. I went to check up on him. Yup you guessed it, he was where the hole was. He had chipped a good chunk out of it. His mouth was closed shut, I told him to open his mouth. All I saw was white chalk like pieces in there. I shuved my finger in his mouth to remove the stuff. He gagged a couple of times but kelp his mouth open. From there I called poison control to make sure there wasn't any lead in the paint. Fortunately the time our apartment building was built, we are fine. What they told me is that what was in his mouth was Drywall. Which consists of Calium.
As soon as I got off the phone I grabbed a piece of plastic with a string through it to cover the back of the hole then held the string with one hand while I shuved plaster into the hole. When I walked away he couldn't resist but to stick his finger through the hole again. So I had to clean him as well as the hole again. We are now in the kitchen while the hole is drying in the livingroom. Its been 2 hours.
The only question I have now is .....Why with all the toys in the livingroom does he decide to eat drywall?

Do you have any battles?

I love it that you shared this story, it was quite amusing! (though I'm sure YOU haven't been feeling amused!).
I don't know that a toddler's mind can always make sense to us parents. What tastes good about dry wall?? I will never for the life of me figure out why they insist on eating things that have GOT to taste or feel yucky!

Our current battle is the "I do it mysewf!" battle.
Oh boy!
Why, oh why do I have such independent children?
When a two year old has decided he can do it "himsewf" and the parent KNOWS he can't really do it "himsewf", and tries to help the little toddler, wow, do the shrieks begin!

If I do something for him that he DID NOT want me to do for him (and trust me, it was by sheer misunderstanding that I did it for him when he really wanted to do it, I'm not about to get in his little stubborn independent way on purpose!) he marches over and reverses whatever I've done so that HE can do it "himsewf. (or he pulls his pants back up, or pulls them back down, or tries to put his shoes back on, or closes the fridge, or opens it, or closes the door, or opens it......ugh!)
Ya know, it's just quicker for me to do it! I need patience!
(again, we really really could use a pulling hair out smiley, along wtih a "rolls the eyes' smiley.)
Although, he is already learning to put his pants on "by himsewf".............that might be good.........
And, at this rate, I'll be pretty much trained to let go and back off by the time he leaves for college.........
So, I guess that's good.

lol.... my son has eaten things just like that... and been destructive without meaning to.... like his bedroom door had some wood vaneer (sp?) hanging off and he just could not resist. He pulled at that stuff until it came off which I did not like.... but they are just sooooo curious.... I could not distract him fully, he would always remember later and return.

on a side note.... you guys should read The Mommy Manual by Barbara Curtis.... she describes this I can do it myself stage very endearingly

Is it a book of humor, or is it a child development book, or something else? I haven't heard of it, is it fun, or sweet, how would you describe it?

Weeellll.... I guess I would put it under "Parenting, general" It may not help you since you've "been there done that" but I really enjoyed its positive look on child raising, especially the toddler years... She kind of just writes from her experience good things to try/do etc. etc. .... she has 12 children and only three are adopted... goodness 9 pregnancies, I don't think I could do that. :o

Ha! Yeah, weellllll, always learning, always learning. I remember thinking I had it down until I had two.......and that was the eye opener to every kids is different and you never know how to deal with everything because every kid is new.
I just eat up parenting stuff. I love learning about it.
People just intrigue me, and there is almost nothing more intriguing than watching, being involved in, learning about, developing little humans. So, if it's a good book, and it'll keep my attention, I'm sure that I would love to check it out. It's always fun to read stories you can identify with. Thanks for the scoop.

Before I had kids I thought the 'pick your battles' was a metaphore, well I have a VERY difficult son (oldest, now 3.5) and I litterally have to get up the energy to stand and fight EVERYday over something. Not that he is all bad, just that I am so close to giving up so many times.

We have two holes in the wall and he is forever putting things in them, DD is younger, but learned the first time, she doesn't go near them.

If there is something to be gotten into DS does it, our cabnets have 'fake plastic front thingies' I really don't know how to describe them, cheap comes to mind. Anyway DS has to try to peel them, with utensils! He is the most distructive child I have ever met! but not usuallly with maliscious (err however that is spelled) intent, just has to know if it comes apart. (legos are my friend! they are supposed to come appart!)

after spending hours yesterday afternoon getting my 2 1/2 yr old xrayed to see where the magnet ball she ate was, I can relate!

This is my 3rd child but she is the most mischevious. She wont stay in bed at night no matter what. You would think after getting out of bed and getting into trouble for the 5th or so time, she would not bother anymore and just stay in bed! but this is an ongoing thing with her and will pass...

There is a condition that kids sometimes have called pica. It involves eating inappropriate things, and chalk and plaster are high on the hit parade of popular items. If this persists, you might want to read up on it and ask your ped.
He is pretty good with not putting things in his mouth. This is the first time he has ever done that. but if it does I will take a look at that.
Lately he has been trying to poke at the plaster.
Its just been a blast since he was born. This was just one of those "What are you doing" moments.

Hey.. don't be saying anything about dog food. I ate it when I was about 4 y/o "Puppy Chow" I didn't think it tasted too bad (then).
My dd (now 15 y/o) liked sucking out the mild sauce out of the Taco Bell packets when she was 3 y/o.
