Baptists and abortion

I am curious,, are most of the main baptist churches against abortion? it seems lotsa protestant denominations are saying abortion is ok now and I was wondering was the main view from the baptist churches were..

The position of the majority of the Baptist churches is that abortion is a sin and constitutes murder. But as in all areas of life, there's no complete agreement. There are liberals and libertarians throughout the Baptist landscape who think abortion is OK in some circumstances, and some conservative and fundamentalists who think abortion is wrong even in situations of rape.

I agree with Humbleman's assesment of the general view of baptists on this issue. One thing I would point out additionally is this: you mention that "lotsa prtestant denominations ..." I would advise you to cross reference views on this with what denominations are sliding more into liberalism and away from standing on the Scriptures. It is the liberal churches like the Episcopals, the Methodists, and the liberal portions of the Lutheran and Presbyterian churches that are mostly going to be the culprits in both cases.

When secular humanism infiltrates the church, and the Bible is marginalised such sin and error as this can not be far behind.

My Independent Baptist church would say abortion is the murder of an innocent life and is a sin. As with any sin it can be forgiven but abortion is a national and worldwide tragedy.

There is no main view from the Baptists. You're going to have a hard time finding a pro-choice Baptist. Even if there were none on the face of the earth, that still wouldn't be indicative of a Baptist stance on abortion, mearly a stance that that individual Baptists have taken.

I happen to agree with you that abortion is wrong and it is murder, but it is not because of what my church teaches. It is because of what I have learned in the Bible.

There is such a thing as liberal Baptist churches. I know that some of these churches don't believe the Bible to be the inerrent word of God, so I suppose they might also be pro-choice. Yet this isn't the norm among Baptists. Most Baptists (and certainly me) are highly pro-life.

I came to the conclusion that Abortion is murder well enough on my own before I came to Christ. My church didn't have to teach me that. It's obvious to even the most callous observer.

And politically speaking, I am fairly libertarian. I believe in most areas of life, things should be between a person and God, not the person and the state, and then maybe God if he wants to get involved sort of thing. But abortion is far beyond just between man and God, the taking of innocent life impacts society negatively, and is therefore the responsibility of the state to protect the innocent.

Any statistics to show Baptists aren't like the rest of society in aborting most of their Down's syndrome babies?

I would imagine some accept that practice as being somehow merciful. A several generations extended family member recently aborted a downs syndrome child. Had she not done so, and brought that child to term, my fiancee and I (VERY soon to be wife) would happily have taken that child as our own. Many of my friends feel the same way. And a good number of them are Atheists...

To kill an unborn child because the child isn't picture perfect is no better than Hitler gassing the Jews in Dacchau... Just a smaller scale

You're braver than I am. *Ducks* Actually, I'm more of an agnostic on the issue (because of issues such as rape and incest) and I hope I'm never confronted with having to take a stand in either direction.

I don't have any but the Fundamental Baptists that are in my circles would all be against aborting a baby just because he or she has Down syndrome.

Thats a pretty big portion of the protestant population. Anglicans also, Church of Nazarene, United, Lutheran, Episcopalian, Methodist, prebyrtarian, Unitarian, even a good amount of "non-demoniational" churches etc. It seems only a small portion has stuck to their guns..

It seems the only churches that Ive found that are Pro-Life are : Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, Baptists, and some evangelicals/pentecoastals. Are there any other churches that are against abortion as a whole?..

I personally don't know of any Baptist churches that are pro-choice. Every Baptist church, I've been in has taught that abortion is murder and sin. My church supports a local sav-a-life ministry and several members who volunteer their time to counsel females against abortion there. That ministry also helps them with monetary & other needs they might have in keeping their baby. They also have connected them with groups who helps with adoption if necessary. My mom did volunteer there for a while.

No stats here either, however I do personally know two families that are Baptist and have children who need lifelong care. One with Down's Syndrome, the other with multiple issues.

My family has had to take that stand. I too hope that you never have to face that.

The Baptist Church itself is neither pro-choice or pro-life as a whole even though a great deal of it's members are pro-life. If all Baptists were pro-life and anti-abortion it would not be an indication of a stance by the Baptist church.

The only stances the Baptist church takes is seperation of church and state (which a few members disagree with), use of two ordinences (believer's baptism and communion) and offices (minister and deacon), autonomy of the individual church, and priesthood of the believer. The latter two in particular keep the Baptist church from being either pro-life or pro-choice.
