  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Automatic voter registration for college students who register for classes online

Americans living abroad can vote using an absentee ballot, at least in national elections.

Thanks. I know. That's what my parents do. I'm just not sure if I'd register to vote from absentee ballot & have it mailed to my parents and then they'd send it to me, or what. I think I'd probably register when I'm at college and use that address.
I probably will attend college in the States. Idk yet. My sister goes to U of Chicago and that's where I'd like to go if I get in. I guess I would register to vote once I'm there using my address at college instead of my house. It would be awesome if you could register to vote just from registering for classes at your college. It would make it such a streamlined process!

The voting age should be raised to 25. Aren't we told that young people's brains aren't fully developed until around that age?
It would save me the trouble of having to vote for one of the terrible choices this year!

It supposedly has to do with "judgment", not being able to properly determine what is right/wrong or smart/dumb. (I.E. not be able to see thru the lies that all politicians tell)...

I will be a licensed physician, before I have 25 years. We begin medical school at an earlier age in Sweden. I think if I'm capable, of making critical decisions about someone's health, I'm certainly capable of voting. Most others who are 18 to 24 are also capable, but, as Ella pointed out, the problem is they do not show up to vote. Not enough older American voters, are turning up to vote, either, from what I understand.

Not to mention, that if at 18, you can be sent off to war, one would think that said 18 year old should have some say in who gets to make that sort of decision.

Agreed.

When registering a vehicle or applying for a license in Arizona, one can opt to register, but it is not automatic. However as this article and the poster notes, many young people are opting to defer drivers licenses...a trend that is increasing as ride share and car hire services increase.

IMO, to reach the younger generation, the voter registration and voting process needs to be automated and brought into the digital age. Almost every aspect of our lives can be done on-line (banking, Tax returns, etc). Why not voting? The current system is archaic and expensive.

Yes. I believe Americans can enlist in the military, when they are 17.5, with parental permission?

Blind post: I have a problem with it. It's very close to making voting mandatory, and I'm a big proponent of people having the option to vote or not as they so choose. It's your vote and you can use it or leave it alone- and that should include whether or not you're even registered. It's a citizen's prerogative. Leading young people by the nose to get them to do what you want is manipulation at its finest. Why can't universities continue doing what has been done all along? Have volunteers on campus sit around with voter registration cards and let the students decide if they want to fill them out or pass the whole thing by.

Don't several states already have automatic voter registration, from earning, and renewing, your driver's license? We have automatic voter registration, in Sweden. Voting is not compulsory. We have an excellent record, in voting. It is a responsibility, we take seriously. In the article, in the original post, it explains how abysmal the voter turnout is, in the U.S., especially for those who are under 25. Why keep doing, what is clearly not effective? It's more efficient, I think, to have an automated process. There would probably be less errors, due to human mistake.

Voter registration is automatic is SC. We get our drivers license and we are automatically registered.

Registration should be as automatic as possible.

The issues comes when we talk of ease of voting. Many forms of voting are open to fraud.
