Alphabet and Phonics 1

Let's begin by comparing the English alphabet and the Hebrew alphabet:

The Hebrew alphabet has 22 letters and no vowel letters. The vowels are the dots and dashes below and above the letters.

English has 26 letters. Some of the letters are vowels.

~*✡*~*~✞~*~*✡*~*~✞~*♥~*✡*~*~✞~*~*✡*~*~✞~*♥~*✡*~*~✞~*~*✡*~*~✞~*♥

Hebrew has letters that change their shape when they appear at the end of the word, we call them final forms.

English has no letters that change their shape when they appear at the end of a word.

~*✡*~*~✞~*~*✡*~*~✞~*♥~*✡*~*~✞~*~*✡*~*~✞~*♥~*✡*~*~✞~*~*✡*~*~✞~*♥

Hebrew has no letters that change their shape at the beginning of a word.

English has letters that change their shape at the beginning of a word, we call them capitals.

~*✡*~*~✞~*~*✡*~*~✞~*♥~*✡*~*~✞~*~*✡*~*~✞~*♥~*✡*~*~✞~*~*✡*~*~✞~*♥

It is possible to learn how to pronounce Hebrew without understanding the meaning of the words. This can be called “reading”.

It is impossible to learn to read English without knowing the meaning of the words.

~*✡*~*~✞~*~*✡*~*~✞~*♥~*✡*~*~✞~*~*✡*~*~✞~*♥~*✡*~*~✞~*~*✡*~*~✞~*♥

Hebrew letters have a numerical equivalent.

English letters do not have a numerical equivalent.

The First Five Letters

Aleph א silent letter 1

Bet ב v as in vine 2
בּ b as in boy

Gimmel ג g as in girl 3
גּ g as in girl

Dalet ד d as in door 4
דּ d as in door

Hey ה h as in house 5

~*✡*~*~✞~*~*✡*~*~✞~*♥~*✡*~*~✞~*~*✡*~*~✞~*♥~*✡*~*~✞~*~*✡*~*~✞~*♥
Three of these letters sometimes have a dot called a dagesh in them. Only the dagesh in the Bet changes the pronunciation.
~*✡*~*~✞~*~*✡*~*~✞~*♥~*✡*~*~✞~*~*✡*~*~✞~*♥~*✡*~*~✞~*~*✡*~*~✞~*♥
The letter א is only pronounced with a vowel. Otherwise it is not pronounced. When you have אָ only the vowel is pronounced. It would sound like the a in car.
~*✡*~*~✞~*~*✡*~*~✞~*♥~*✡*~*~✞~*~*✡*~*~✞~*♥~*✡*~*~✞~*~*✡*~*~✞~*♥
When the letter ה comes at the end of the word without a vowel, it is silent.

Vowels

Qamets אָ a as in car

Patach אּ a as in car

This is a Work in Progress!

Alphabet and Phonics 1

Exercise 1:
Circle the letters you know and know the names of the letters.

בראש
ית ברא אלהים
הארץ אלהים את המארת הגרלים

המאדר הגדל הירם הגלים האדםה
בדגת גך ין יד יצזב אישו את אביו ראת

Exercise 2:

Pronounce these letters with the vowel. The letter is pronounced first then the vowel.

אָ The Aleph is silent, the Qamet sounds like a as in car = a

בַּ The Bet sounds like b as in boy, the Patach sounds like a as in car =ba

אָּ אַ בָ בַ בַּ גָ גַּ רָ רַּ הָ הַ
בָ גַ רָּ הַ אָ בַּ גָ רַ בָ הַ אַ גָ גַּ

Debi,

If you are ok with the way I re-typed your lessons and if you think we can get away without using numbers, I could simply re-type the lessons as closely as possible from your posted images and people can use them that way. Not perfect, but it may be practical.

When I tried to save a page with editable text that has Hebrew on it it doesn't work. When it interprets the editable text it does so with an english keyboard layout. You loose the hebrew letters. This is why I suggest printing these pages out.

let's see if this will work
