Are there different degrees of sin, or does God's justice require the fibber to receive the same punishment as the serial killer? What do you think and why?

For me, I believe that there are different degrees, but I don't know exactly why I believe so, particularly when Matthew 5 and James 2 come up. What do you think?

Yes, some sins are worse than others.

Yes, all sin is bad and separates us from God.

Stealing a cookie from the cookie jar isn't as bad as murdering a thousand innocent children. But all sin is symptomatic of the reality of our fallenness, our brokenness--Original or Ancestral Sin; and therefore our need of redemption and healing which is only in, by, and through Jesus Christ.

But each person is tempted when he is drawn away and enticed by his own evil desires. Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is fully grown, it gives birth to death. (James 1:14-15)

I think this is all that needs to be said. All sin has the same final consequence so what does it matter which is most egregious?

There are venial and mortal sins. Venial sins are generally mild and do not require confession or repentance.
Mortal sins, however, are major and require attention. These type of sins include adultery, idolatry, bearing false witness, murder, etc.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sins are classified into seven groups: Lust, Wrath, Gluttony, Vanity, Sloth, Envy, and Greed
Though venial sins do not put your salvation at stake, you will spend time in Purgatory until those sins are exercised. This is because Jesus' atonement can only apply to the person when they are free of sin and in tune with the New Covenant.
Mortal sin, obviously, will put your salvation at stake. Until such sins are repented, you are outside of grace.
Sin is different its based on the individuals soul this is why we are judged individually.. If all sin were the same God could just do a mass judgement and put his all together but, because there are much deeper factors and some are darker in nature than others we looked at on a individual.
The longer you struggle with that sin, like for example homosexuality.. thats a longterm sin.. or last a long time so that sin effects others and when we effect others we partially responsible too..
