Are all sins equal before God?

I am starting a blog where various people can answer questions about God.
I'll post your answers on there if you would like.
My question is are all sins equal before God?
I'd like you to include a name and religious preference but these are not necessary.

Hi Loida, all sins are equal to God, execpt for the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit, which is not forgivable.
All sins are equally punishable, meaning, hell.
Wages of sin=death
Speaking against the holy spirit signifies a hardened heart, malicious, with hatred towards the holy spirit. Not anger, people do get mad at God sometimes, probably because they're new to Christianity.

Also, it's easy to see, that adultery is far worse than stealing a penny from a rich guy.
From a preferecial perspective, I'd rather have a penny stolen from a rich guy, rather than adultery.
God however does not want sin to happen at all, and he is longsuffering, giving us time to repent, so we may be saved from our sins through Jesus.

All sins are equal, but the worst one is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit.

Sins may also grow in severity depending on if you did them out of weakenss, accidental or deliberately (my opinion)

I don't think that all sins are equal especially since many sins are compound sins stacked on other sins but I will say I think all men are equal in their stance before God in light of their sins and any difference in the magnitude of the sin is made irrelevant infront of an almighty perfect God because any one sin made us totally unworthy

I don't remember where I first heard this, but this is my favorite explanation. When we look at our world we see everything as it is in front of us. We see the height of the mountains, the depths of the valleys. But God looks at it from above. He sees everything, but there are no heights and depths from His viewpoint. That is the difference between how God sees sin and how we see it. We see the different depths of sin. God sees it as level.

Looking at someone lustfully means you've already commited adultery, and being angry with your brothers and sisters is murder, but with all sins being equal, most everyone would have lost their virginity younger and commited murder even earlier. No one I've ever asked knew for sure because most everyone dislikes the idea of "thought crime" counting against us.

I see what you're saying, but that seems to be combining God's perspective (all sins are equal) with our judicial scale. The reason that we view some in a more harsh light (i.e. murder, rape) than others (larceny, vandalism, fraud) is because of their impact on society. Something like the shooting this past summer in Aurora, Colorado had huge implications not just in the immediate community of Aurora but it resonated throughout the nation for at least a couple of weeks. Cases of vandalism or larceny rarely reach that tier.

Granted, this is purely from a political science perspective.

Just my thoughts.

Yes and no. They're equal in the sense that "sin" means to "miss the mark", so it's binary -- you've either hit the mark or you've missed it. It doesn't matter by how far you've missed it. Missing it at all consigns one to hell.

But all sins are not equal in terms of their consequences. For example, hating someone in your mind is as bad as physically murdering them in the positional sense (i.e., wrt one's standing before God), but not in its consequences. And since there are different degrees of punishment, it implies that there must be different degrees of sin (since punishment will fit the sin).

Yes, all sins are equal. James 2:10
10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law and yet offend on one point, he is guilty of all.

If the law was a perfect glass window, and you shot a pebble at it, or threw a piano out of it, you still have to replace the window.

Romans 14:23 qualifies sin as whatever isn't of faith. So in God's eyes, all have sinned and fall short of glory in themselves.
23 But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because he does not eat from faith; for whatever is not from faith is sin.

Sin did have an effect on how we related to one another, and so if you go out and murder someone, as opposed to just fantasizing sexually about a person, you're going to get some different responses from people. But those who are righteous in God's eyes will suffer persecution. So pleasing people, as a believer, doesn't entitle a person to an easier life in their interactions with others.

Our conscience is a factor that can make believing God easier or harder. Keeping a good conscience, and living a moral life makes our ability to stand in that righteousness easier or harder. So even if a person could stop their lying, murdering, and cheating; those sins of omission could still eat at them, and come between them and other people. Forgetting to take the garbage out, could spring up verses talking about loving God, and loving your family, and doing unto others, giving, etc; and if your senses have not been exercised to discern both good and evil, you would experience the same condemnation you had lying.
