Any good orchestral compilation software available?

Sorry, I actually meant composition Software.

I used to love writing out music on an old program called music writer (creator) by Cakewalk. It was put out back in '97 and allowed a person to write music for up to 96 instruments, and then play it all back as you were writing each track. Since almost all composer software is now loop based, and midi generated (audio to digital capture), actual writing of the notes for each instrument is no long available.

I have tried programs like power-tab, and have seen some basic music writing programs but all seem to have the quirk of not being able to write (and playback) two or more notes of unequal length at the same time. As a classical guitarist, for me this feature is important, and as a composer it makes harmonizing very choppy.

Has anyone found a composition program that will allow the flexibility and note-writing feature that would fit my needs?

Most of the audio programs such as Logic, Cubase, and Pro Tools will do this. I don't compose, so I'm not familiar with the details like whether or not you can write on something that looks like sheet music or if you have to use a keyboard track (you may have to use Finale if you want a sheet music-like interface), but almost all of the composers I know use one of those three (primarily Logic & Cubase).

The future for Sibelius is looking a bit hazy - Avid is divesting itself of its consumer division, laid off their London office and claims to be moving development of Sibelius to Kiev. We'll see if that actually pans out.

Avid has been getting rid of a lot of the consumer grade products lately. They sold off M-Audio, which makes sense since M-Audio made them pennies compared to their professional products, but we'll have to wait and see what happens with Sibelius. It's still one of the best notation products on the market and used by many people. I know there is call for them to sell it by the user base so who knows.

So I checked out Sibellius and Finale, Sibellius 7 is around $500, so way out of the question for my current needs. Then I checked Finale and found out they have a free version called "Notepad", though with limited voicing, I decided to download it, and for now it will do what I need from it. Finale's 'Songwriter' is downloadable for about $50. It provides more instruments, and further features that would be indispensable for somebody leading a music program for budding musicians etc. If I outgrow Notepad, then 'Songwriter' would be a more appropriate option for me.

Thanks for the leads. Appreciated!
