I am a pro with ereaders (I bought my first ereader - Sony's PRS-500 - back in 2006). There are many places to find good free books for the Kindle (mobi format) and other readers. Some of them are (can't post links, so google the names):

Gutenberg
Manybooks
Mobileread (choose e-books tab)
Amazon itself is a good place to get free books even some current bestsellers when they run promotions.

Plus if you use Calibre, you can convert any format into mobi for your Kindle. You can also email anything to your Kindle (each Kindle has an email account) and Amazon will convert and deliver it.

My ex got me the Kindle 2 for my birthday last year. It was an extremely kind purchase, and I love it.

I haven't totally abandoned physical books, though. Buying the physical book used is still usually much cheaper than buying the electronic version. Plus, if I really love a book, I prefer to have the physical copy. That way, I can make margin notes, and flip around to the parts I need to get to quickly. With a physical book, I can check the index, and quickly flip to the page number I need. Doing the same would take way too long on the Kindle.

Anyway, the only reason I can think of that would ever make me pay money to buy any e-reader is simply because it's a space saver. Physical books take up a ton of space, and they're not always easy to get rid of if you don't need them anymore. If it weren't for that one advantage, I'd feel much less enthusiastic about e-readers than I do. I'm old fashioned.

Good points but the ebooks will develop in time. Even now they allow in-built index (at least there is such a function in Kindle's mobi format), hyperlinks, cross-references, pop-up dictionaries (when you read and come up with a word that you don't know or a Bible character that you would like to look up, put the cursor in front of the word and voila!). Imagine having a 6-volume reference set in one convenient electronic form with cross-references and ability to retrace your steps. There are navigation tricks that some books already use (fore-mentioned index, 5-way controller navigation). Oh, don't forget searching. It's really quick on the Kindle.

It was MobileRead Forums that got me into an ereader. I did a Google search on them and came up with that. I was rather active on that forum asking questions for a while and will keep them around if I ever need questions answered. I use Calibre as well and it works ok most of the time but is not perfect. I have found that it does not convert .pdf files to .mobi very well. I enjoy my Kindle every day and I am very happy with it.

Yep, MobileRead's one of the three ereader forums I frequent.

Calibre is not perfect (personally, I use it only for converting from mobi to epub, doing my own mobi files from scratch via Mobipocket Creator or kindlegen). However, in all fairness, there is no program out there that can do a good conversion from pdf to any format. It is impossible because of the way pdf works. It is primarily a presentation format (i.e. formatting/layout over text). For this reason, pdf can only be the final stage in publishing, just before you send it to the printer. It's a one way street. A quality conversion from pdf requires hard manual work.

I have the latest Kindle 3G version. I also have an iPad. Personally I love the Kindle the best. I can see it in the bright sun, battery is great, and it's easy to keep with me at the fire station or on the fire truck. In a pinch if we get stuck on the truck for hours and I don't have my Kindle, the app on my phone will pick up the exact page and update. Can't beat that!

I own a Kindle 3 and I prefer it over the Nook for these reasons:

The battery like is much better on the Kindle
I prefer the touch of the keyboard for navigation
I do not care for touch screens, thus do not like that feature of the Nook
The Kindle loads books faster
Kindle has more font adjustments than Nook
Kindle is cheaper to buy

My mother owns a Nook and that is how I can compare the two. I prefer the Kindle to the Nook in an E-Ink reader.

Hi Stan-Honey! I don't have either yet, but after having read up on it I will go with the Kindle whenever I do get it mainly because of the glare-free screen or whatever its called. My parents both got one & they love them.

The decision has been taken out of my hand. I just found out today that my children are getting me a Kindle for father’s day. My wife told me not to tell anyone as the children want it to be a surprise SHHHHHHH quite time

Haha, yes indeed! I'm not here often but I do looove to read and have been thinking about getting the Kindle. That is so cute that your kids are getting you that! I think its hilarious that your wife told you that, I'm sitting here giggling over it!! Sounds like something I would do.
