For those who don't know who he is, Johns is the ex captain of the Newcastle Knights NRL team. He was forced into early retirement in April due to a serious neck injury. He was definitely one of the best players around in recent times.

This is awful...for his family and friends and all his fans; the people who look up to him and the kids who wants to be like him. (well hopefuly not exactly like him ) I wa slistening to the morning news just after reading this, and according to it, Johns has admitted the story is true, and claims the tablet was pushed into his pocket by person unknown.

(NZ Herald)

SYDNEY - Australian rugby league great Andrew Johns has been arrested and cautioned for drug possession in London.
British transport police have confirmed that Johns was arrested at King's Cross station on Sunday, Fairfax and News Limited report today.
He was believed to have been returning from the Church nightclub in nearby Kentish Town.
Johns was cautioned and released without charge after being found to be in possession of one ecstasy tablet.
The former Newcastle, New South Wales and Australian captain was stopped by transport police officers at King's Cross underground station.
It is believed Johns had been to The Church, an all-day club at Kentish Town that is popular with expatriates.
British Transport Police carried out an operation on the London underground network targeting drug users travelling to the popular Notting Hill Carnival.
Johns was one of 206 people arrested for drugs possession in London over the British holiday weekend.

A British Transport Police spokeswoman said in a statement last night: "A man in his 30s was arrested and cautioned for possession of an ecstasy tablet following a routine police operation at King's Cross underground station at 4.20pm on Sunday, 26th of August."
Johns, who was forced out of the game in April by a recurring neck injury, has been holidaying in Europe.
He and injured Brisbane Broncos skipper Darren Lockyer were guests at the Challenge Cup final between St Helens and Catalans at Wembley Stadium the day before his arrest.
He had been in London for a few weeks and had accepted an invitation by former Newcastle Knight Billy Peden player to pass on his tactical and kicking knowledge at the Harlequins rugby league club.
Johns has also been working with the Wallabies ahead of the rugby World Cup.

I'm just watching the Footy Show. On it Phil Gould is interviewing Andrew Johns.

He has admitted a 10 year drug problem apparently mostly in the off-season, and recreational drugs not performance enhancing). He has also admitted suffering from depression for a very long time.

This has absolutely floored me...and I'm not even a Knights fan. I'm sure tomorrow will be a very quiet day in Newcastle (extremely commited fan base)

The poor bloke looks so ashamed and....lost.

A career where he struggled with drugs and alcohol brings it into more relevance:

Hi tigercub,

The reason why I'm so down on football is that it glamourises violence as a form of entertainment and teaches people (especially young boys) that it's ok to kick, hit, and hurt people in order to get what you want. The same thing goes with boxing.

We claim to call ourselves civilised, yet we worship the most barbaric games as entertainment. This is why it needs to be banned.

Bring back archery, tiddlywinks, ten-pin bowling and snooker!

We all have issues and we all need pray at some point in our lives.

It is a tragic case and unfortunately it shows how full on depression can be and how damaging depression can be.

I've met joey a few times and he seems like a really decent bloke, hopefully now he will get the help that he needs.

To me though the real problem lies within the football industry, we have seen to many drug issues, sexual assault incidents etc....What do people think is going to happen when you get men earning anywhere from $70,000-$200,000 and minimum working year...with a long off season.....plus fame and ego...creating men with time on there hands, money and ego can only lead to something bad.

Those are my thoughts anyway.

I don't know how many younger kids actually have sportsman as role models, but what with Andrew Johns, Wendell Sailor and Shane Warne so prominent in the media concerning drugs, how many of us teenagers will get used to drugs being everywhere and anywhere. And being more comfortable with drugs is a step further towards actually using them.

Yes you got this right, and it's not only the footies, EVERY person who has idle time on his/her hands will fall. The most crime is from unemployed young people. Jesus didn't teach us for nothing that we must labour 6 days a week. Work is a blessing for us.BTW there is nothing in the Bible about retirement, a lot of people I know retire, do nothing much, and after 2 years they are dead.

Today He has announced that he has been taking drugs for 10 years, he has also suffered the pressures of depression on his life.

How sad that he has suffered and slipped into the addiction patterns during his career. The pressures of sport, life and addiction have taken it's toll.

The media made a comment of a man telling the truth.
The truth is he hid behind his addiction for 10 years and it only came out when he was 'caught out'. Sport and the integrity of players will suffer.

I'll pray that this man finds peace, that his depression is healed, that his family will support him and that the media will leave him alone, I'll also pray that young people will see that drugs is not the answer to a sporting career.

It is sad but when people foolishly look at these people as role models all they see is the football player not the whole person. They don't see the hard work that goes on in the background. The long training sessions. With the start and ending dates of the season nad pre-season training and the work they do with schools they don't get much time off. All this pressure adds up and if they step just a little bit out of line they will be pounced on. No wonder some turn to drugs to cope. Several years in a row not long before state of origin Andrew Johns would do something bad in a game and the sports would run a four page story with the title Joey brain explosion or something similar. Imagine if our mistakes caused four pages of of writing in the paper. I'm glad I don't have that to deal with. Players have been sacked from state of origin for doing less silly things than I have. Should I have been suspended from my job? Let's give a bit of equal treatment. Fair treatment that we would want. That doesn't mean letting him get away with it.

I think that sometimes we make people out to be something that they are not. I admire his honesty to talk about his problems openly. His path isn't uncommon of many people who turn to alcohol to 'drown their sorrows' or those who turn to porn or to gambling to fill that hole in their lives [that only God can fill].

He's an ordinary and fallible bloke like the rest of us with ordinary problems and a sadly common way of trying to solve them.

It is often those who we perceive to be the most successful that realise just how empty they really are ... money can't fill the hole, neither can fame, etc. The celebrities like Nicole Richie and company are also further evidence of this.
