It is said that because Adam was made from the dust of the earth, that he had an "earthy" tone, but I suspect his complexion was probably lighter in color and the blood, being red, affected his appearance. Since his name is derived from the above, I suggest it probably has to do with the ability to "blush". Have you ever seen a very dark person "blush"?

Yes, adam in Hebrew is alef-dalit-mem. Same Hebrew letters as edom (Genesis 25:30) but with different vowels.
