  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Someone recently asked me this question in a pm and I thought it would make a good thread.

I picked the name "Akathist" because it meant "standing in prayer" (loose translation.) I felt that it would be a good reminder to me whenever I came to CF about prayer.

In reading information on this topic, I came across this article on the Akathist to the Theotokos.

Does anyone know if this is the first Akathist written? The article implies that.

If you follow the link HERE it has the whole devotion.

There are many other Akathists. This is my favorite one.

What are other people's favorite Akathist?

I really like the "Akathist for Holy Communion", which is in the Book of Akathists published by Holy Trinity, Jordanville.

Unfortunately, lately, because of two deaths of people either not in the Church or by suicide, I've been praying the "Akathist for the Repose of the Departed", which has beautiful prayers aimed at those not in the Church. It is also in the book mentioned above.

I need to find that book. None of my family is Orthodox and I have struggled to find prayers to say for them when they have died.

I found a copy of that particular Akathist here:

http://thechristianconscience.blogspot.com/2002_09_01_archive.html

Scroll down about halfway and you'll see it. WARNING: this guy is Catholic and he made a couple of additions (!!!) One is in Kontakion 6, and one is in the Closing Prayer. If you copy and paste it to a Word document and save it there, then you can take out those words and then print it as it should be.
