I have to admit, I always had mixed feelings about whether abortion should be legal. I mean, I don't believe in it. I'd never have one. But I was unsure about whether other people should be allowed to.

Now, I have to say, I recently stumbled across this article. I was pretty shaken up when reading it. It gives stories of abortion from people who experienced it. I am wondering what people think.

Abortion: Should people have the right to abort an unborn child? - by Sarah Terzo - Helium

I think that abortion is very wrong. I think it should be illegal in most cases unless a woman's life is in danger or she was raped.

If it is wrong why does being raped or putting the mothers life in danger make it a better option?

Why?

So many people say 'abortion is bad except...'. If you believe an abortion is the same as killing someone then how does a rape happening, followed by a murder make it okay or less bad?

Abortion emotionally devastates women who get them, physically the humans it kills, it decimates the future tax base of the society, and it also increases the incidence of breast cancer among those who get abortions. From a pragmatic view, I think abortion is horrible for society. That said, its nice to have it as an option if an 'accident' happens. Pregnant women can often be directed to choose what strong willed men would have them choose. Even when it is not in the physical or mental best interests of the woman.

I believe abortion should be illegal. I think I posted on another part of this site that I had an abortion twenty years ago. I went on without a care in the world until I went and saw the controversial Body World's exhibit. I never looked at abortion the same again.

I live in Canada, and in Canada abortion is legal up to 40 weeks. So by that account it has been decided that a human life is not recognized until it is out of the body regardless of the gestational age. I find it amazing that people can ignore that a 39 week old unborn child is not a human life.

Why is it considered so much more horrible for a pregnant woman to be murdered by someone than a non pregnant woman. Sometimes unborn children are recognized and sometimes not. In the case of a murdered pregnant woman the unborn is now recognized in an effort to make the murderer seem so much more of a horrible person. When one has an abortion, killing a human life is accepted due to circumstances of the mother's own doing or not. These perspectives seem to me to be based upon convenience at the time and not a well thought out process.

Yes I understand it is my right to do what I want with my body as a woman. Should I have more of a right to do with my body what I want than the right of another to life. Should I have the right to kill a human life because someone raped me? I don't think so.

As far as accidents I don't believe there is any such thing. We as humans know that anytime we have sex, unprotected or not there is a chance of pregnancy.

I think it's selfish for a woman to forsake a future life like that, it's selfish and it is wrong in God's eyes. Unfortunately, this world tends to emphasize selfishness, that "you don't have to if you don't want to." Which isn't to say I'm against free rights, but there's a difference in having the liberty to do something, and knowing if exercising that liberty is the right thing to do. And in this case, unless it threatens your own life, using the right to abort your child is wrong.

I think abortion's a crime and it's no different than killing a human outside the womb!!!

You are free to believe whatever you like, of course, but abortion is not a crime, and is not the same as killing someone outside the womb.

I can understand your mixed feelings .
I have often asked myself how far should I go in imposing my moral values on others through legislation .
Abortion is a life and death issue .
Abortion is murder of the child in the womb .
It should , therefore , be illegal .
I do not think that Christians , who oppose abortion , serve their cause well by compromising on other life issues .
Life is from conception to natural death , and is God's gift which no human has the right to take away .

This unanswerable question is why the pro-choice movement is losing momentum.

To be fair, person or personhood is a rather nebulous term. However, to me, personhood is the state of being a sentient, cognizant, individual. A fetus is none of those things.

That makes as much sense as murder being illegal, except if it is imposed by government via the death penalty. Some have a right to kill and other's don't and that is accepted by many in our society.

Killing a human life whether completely formed or not is killing a human life. That life is supposed to be protected and well cared for by mom, not extinguished by her.

I'm sure you're aware of the flaws in your definition, which have been debated ad nauseam, but let me ask a different question. Do animals have rights? Why can't I go outside and kill my cat?

Neither is a newborn outside of the womb for for the first couple of months of life. This theory seems quite flawed to me.
