  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I chatted with a member of a Christian band called Dr Jones recently. Their music is Christian but does not use God's name, saying "You" instead.

He got an email once from someone who had downloaded the song from I-tunes... saying, "I loved your music but I had a question about this one song, where you said 'you'. Were you talking about a woman or about God, because if it's about a woman, then I love the song, but if it's about God, then I hate the song."

What do you make of that?

I mean really if a person is going to wig out if it's either about God or woman than I guess that they are being kinda' petty, or really dislikes God....
I just hope that your buddy told him the truth, not what they wanted to hear?

yeah that happens, and it usually really annoys bands becuz it is a really dumb petty thing. But obivious isn't not the song the guy would hate, it's the fact that he might like a song about God ...let alone actually like God, oh my. hahah ...ah whatever.

I think if the point of the band saying "You" instead a name of God directly is to kind of cover it up or smooth it over so ppl will be intrested in it, then I think they got what was coming to them. But If they say "You" becuz in their own hearts there's no doubt who the song is about or what the lyrics portray, then I think that's just as noble as needs to be.


People are always going to be like that though, you know? like if it's Christian and they're not, they're going to snobby about it, but alot times it goes the other way around too. It seems so petty, yet what kind of cure can you put to something like that?

You know what it says to me....

Whatever approach you take as a Christian band regarding how overt you are, you are going to run into the same question with your audience: do they accept or reject God?

For me this is a challenge to bands who are trying very hard to be accepted by a non-Christian audience, only then to find out somewhere down the line that their listeners are just not going to accept their message anyway.

Of course, I'm all for being careful with your approach and winning people over slowly, but chasing after people's acceptance is a tricky business.
