I seek to understand here. I'm not sure if the rules allow for something like this, but I'm going to try it anyway. I'm defining Protestant here as anyone who does not belong to a Roman Catholic or Orthodox church of some sort. I know some do not like this label, but just bear with me.

If you are Protestant as per the definition, tell us what your understanding of Mary is -- who she is, what she did, how/if she should be honored, what "all generations shall call me blessed" means, etc. Do not make references to Roman Catholicism or Orthodoxy; post only your own beliefs. I simply seek to understand where everyone is coming from from a non-reactionary standpoint. I should also add that Roman Catholics and Orthodox should not argue with anything said in this thread, however inaccurate you may find a given statement to be.

Mods: if this thread is not acceptable in this forum, please move it to somewhere where it is. Thanks.

Did I ask a horrible question or something? I have no agenda here... no intentions of arguing... why no answers?
Well, there are 3 or 4 threads on Mary going on, and we are all hopscotching around arguing with each other. Maybe they got burned out.

One of the main points of this forum is the discussion of Mary. You would think that a thread which is supposed to have no Catholic/Protestant arguing would be a more popular thread...

Are you kidding? Arguing is half the fun. LOL

But you're right: You would think so. I'll bet that EO's like you and Catholics like me know more about protestant attitudes toward Mary then THEY do.

My understanding of Mary is probably the same as yours.

Do tell.

If everybody had the same understanding of Mary as me, there would be no arguing here, would there? For once, I'd like to hear what others think without the heat of debate clouding it all up. So explain what you mean by that, per favore.

I for one am all "mary'd out". I never think of the "mary" until I come to this board.

She was a woman used by God and that is all. She is no more imprtant or deserving of honor than any other mortal that made themselves available and obedient to God. She was not sinless and she is not a co-redemptor.

That sounded reactionary.

How did God use her? What did He do through her? Pretend like I don't have any clue what you're going to say. I want to understand your position without the influence of my own or anyone else's beliefs.

I know you didn't ask me but I thought I would respond anyway.

Luke 1:31And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.

32He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

33And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

I wrote a prayer for Mary's intercession for the first commandment... let's see if I can dig it up...

Hail, Sacred widowed orphan, and caregiver for the dieing. Oh, Blessed Virgin though married to a most wonderful father, beseech thee your Son, Whom you watched die, that we may be granted the grace of faith that we should never doubt the Lord our God through lifes many challenges.

The very fact that God chose her is in itself a high honor. How can we do less?

And, since Christ obeyed the law perfectly, including "Honor Thy Mother And Father", how can we do less? Are we not called to immitate Christ?
