The problem isn't writers not being hired, it's a lack of writers. With cable, pay channels, a resurgant Independant film industry and the general thinning of the writing herd, shows might wind up with a couple of decent writers if any in their stable. The rest of the shows wind up with a room full of hacks producing offal.

The days of having a stable of television scriptwriting geniouses producing television for the ages each week is probably gone. What you have to look for are the diamonds amongst the droppings. The last three weeks of Scrubs has proved to me that there are some might fine scriptwriters out there and if they're matched with a winning cast you get an awesome show week after week.
