I came across this story the other day of a Roman Catholic priest who fell in love with a woman, and converted to Anglicanism in order to marry her. As a gifted pastor, he was able to, after a year, become a priest in the Episcopal Church. He is now happily married with a new baby, and a thriving congregation.

He was a TV star as a RCC priest, so I guess his story was quite well known in his area.

T o be honest I was suprised that people were so positive about this. He was having a relationship for some time with this woman and didn't leave because he was in love, he left because he was exposed. Then he said he had been thinking of leaving for some time to the press, which was a surprise to his superiors, to whom he had said nothing. Either he was lying to make it look more palpable, or he was not discussing the kinds of things he ought to have been with his bishop.

I don't think mandatory celibacy for priests is a very good idea, but everything this guy did at the time seemed like what you would expect from a bit of an egoist who loved the limelight and didn't have much respect for his own pastors.

A celibate life is in of itself a vocational calling. To the best of my understanding the Catholic church sees both celibacy and marriage as Gods calling to a way of life that honours God. Celibacy allows a greater focus upon a relationship with God through Christ.

I do not think he was honest with himself or his spiritual directors; not everyone who goes to a seminary leaves as a priest.

There is a season for everything. We do not know what he felt when he was going through seminary. I gather that there are modules that they do each year to understand celibacy, sexual issues, etc. Maybe these need looking at.

Anyway, I think it is lovely that he has settled down with his wife and new baby.

I imagine that he has made his peace with God and thanked him for being a God that forgives, and thanked God for the new blessings that he gives every day.

I am glad that the Episcopal church can use his gifts in their ministry to the community he is serving in.

As a related note, I have a relative, who must now be pushing 90, who left the RCC priesthood to marry the woman he fell in love with. He didn't pursue the priesthood elsewhere and became a successful businessman. Perhaps he did the right thing, but perhaps he could have continued to be a pastor. No one will know. I am glad that my family has not been denied his lovely wife, sons and grandchildren.
