I've heard this asked several times over my lifetime, as well as wondering this question myself, until now.

Why would God allow that to happen if he is real?

First off, This World, This lifetime, and this existence, is in the domain and thee realm, of thee Devil. If you wish to blame someone for suffering blame him.

Secondly, This World, This Lifetime, and this Existence, isn't Heaven.
Because, when we get to heaven, there is no more pain. There is no more suffering, and there is no more Evil.
