(this is the companion to what I wrote about a week ago, and then posted in the Social Justice forum)
I am rather bothered that the elections seem to be taking another turn, due to the troubles with the economy.
I hate it when people make money the deciding factor (in whatever situation).
Seems people always think the dems are better for the pocketbook. Guess they suppose their going to be the ones better for a handout. I hear so many better who seem to be bothered with the whole bailout idea. Sure, but then they don’t mind and wouldn’t say a peep if it were “they’ who were the ones getting a bailout.
I don’t pretend to act like I know much about finance, and really I should learn more, but I was listening to what some expert was saying about why the bailout is needed, stuff about liquidity and how that all connects to the whole economy. If it will help keep the whole thing afloat then, it makes sense. I think people are just jealous on hearing the words bailouts for companies- again, I’m sure they would love to have a bailout when they might need one.
Some are saying , the package shouldn’t go through unless it has like a bailout for home owners etc.. Did I miss it, didn’t they already pass something like that a few months ago, to help troubled home owners.
I know a week or so ago I wrote about how I was mad about some blaming lower income people for the bad loans. I still think that was wrong, but I would like to be fair. I also think there are people of various income levels that took out loans they shouldn’t have ( and some companies shouldn’t have let then do it).
Then again, I think some of those people wouldn’t have been pressured to do that if they could find a home at a decent, non inflated price.
On the other hand some other people just went over there heads due to their own covetousness, & or lust for status. Some others couldn’t resist selling their properties to not just make money- but make “a killing”.
When it comes this kind of stuff, I try not to judge (nor like to be judged). There are some people and times when I have make wrong/bad decisions and we have to deal with the consequences. Sometimes some people knowingly do foolish things because of their own greed etc.. There are other times and other people who have gotten in trouble because of things out of their hands, situations that weren’t directly their fault, and other times when it is a bit of both. I think sometimes people need to deal with the consequences, other times they should get leniency, and other times when they need mercy and sometimes help. From the outside it’s just hard to judge, so I don’t think we can lump everyone in the same basket when talking about financial troubles.
Personally I can’t stand greed, covetousness, and or a lust for status- wherever it’s found. This is, either among the “have’s or the have nots” . I know those who don’t have whatever and think the greedy ones are the wealthy- like complaining about corporate greed, and big corporations. Then you got the ones who already have and think they don’t really have it-like it is always someone else who has it great. I rememeber my hubby was driving a limo for awhile and listened to a lot of talk. People complaining and being in competition and covetousness over who made how many more millions. He’s also heard spoiled rich kids complaining about how so and so has the bigger mansion, when they already have more than like 90% of the rest of the world.
I however don’t get into that stuff about how inherently bad big corporations are. I look at it this way, yes I am for the “little guy” the average Joe, the blue collar, kind of populous. Shh- I have a secret, that I think I even understand what Castro might have been trying to do. I like and wish the world (especially the church) would be like the book of Acts.- where they had all things in common and no one had any lack. Yet when I took this one class and had to read about Mexico and yes how the common people were treated unfairly, but then how they wrongly murdered all the rich people and took everything from them regardless. That too was the wrong way to handle unfairness . Animal farm doesn’t work.
Anyway I’m not against big business, just like that. Big business provides lots of jobs, that helps people. I think this whole thing making Wal-Mart some kind of poster child is silly. Equally silly is how some tried to keep Wal-Mart out of our area just because it wasn’t union. Yes I think unions help (for the most part) but to deny people jobs, who really need more opportunities, just because they aren’t union doesn’t make sense. They could at least start there (start somewhere) and move on to something else.
I have an opinion too about the whole “sweat shop” argument, but I may put that on the “social justice” forum.
Too, though I don’t get into greed, covetousness, or status lovers, I do respect entrepreneurs. I respect when people build something, build a company etc., kind of like apostles. I get into hearing the stories, watching biographies of people like Martha Stewart and Sam Walton. Really I don’t think true entrepreneurs aren’t motivated mainly by those others things but because they want to create/build something, usually something big, and they are willing to work hard to get there.
In the process, I doubt many are thinking of this, but they also are providing and building for others along the way.
So, putting it all together, I think this whole economic crisis is complex, with blame enough to go around, but we shouldn’t generalize. Certainly we shouldn’t turn to a political party just because we think they might be more likely to bail us out/issue out hand outs. There are greater issues at stake.
Lord, hear the prayer of your people who trust in you, to provide for us, to have mercy during these troubled times. Help us to straighten out that which needs it.
Let us be a voice for those who have no voice, and vote according to your will.
