Jesus said repent in accord with His Gospel of the Kingdom which taught the selflessness, servitude and justice of the Kingdom compared to the self serving gain at the expense of others world of man. Those who sought a more just life from their oppression had no trouble understanding the repentance (change) in nature required of them, and understanding the benefits of acting in the ways of the Kingdom vs the trouble creating traditional ways of mankind.
That would be especially essential today but the selfishness and gain at the expense of others of man has become, not just a traditional nature of man, but the philosophy behind nations. So fewer will wish to repent, but instead prefer gospels that tickle the ears.
Mark 1:14 Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, 15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
Matthew 3:2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
