(Note: I do not claim to be a prophecy expert, nor do I wish to argue over the theology of the end of the age [Eschatology], but any kind/patient comments are appreciated)
Luke 21:25-28
The Coming of the Son of Man
“And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves, people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” (ESV)
The ESV Study Bible notes that Jesus is now focusing to the further future than the destruction of the Temple, which he just predicted:
"Luke 21:25-38 Jesus Foretells the Coming of the Son of Man. Having warned of the approaching destruction of the temple and Jerusalem (vv. 5–24), Jesus turns now to the more distant future and foretells his second coming."
Jesus is speaking of his second advent. What signs will appear in the heavens? What great perplexity of nations will occur? The nations will be puzzled. Only the Lord knows, but perhaps we can say that some of these signs are beginning to come about even today. Certainly there is great confusion and fear among the people of the nations. I know that this is not necessarily an imminent sign of Jesus' return, but it is certainly a possible indicator that his second coming is drawing nearer.
I look forward to Jesus' return, but I am unsure as to exactly what will occur on this planet between now and then, but it sounds tumultuous. We must rest in the Lord and endure to the end, because our redemption will draw near. Jesus guarantees this!
The "roaring of the sea and waves" may refer to the tumult of the nations, as the sea is generally considered to refer to nations and troubles in Hebrew idiom. Even the heavens will be shaken, which seems to refer to some cosmic events happening when Jesus comes again. It will be unmistakable that it is Jesus, as he will be coming on the clouds and these signs will occur.
We are to raise our heads in hope and trust in Jesus to preserve us eternally. He is our savior and will certainly save us, even at the end of history.
Daniel 7:13 - “I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him.
